Just looking for any ideas on the best way to rewire a transducer cable. Was running from 1 fishing spot to the next, hit a wave and the trolling motor deployed and sliced my tranducer cable for my front depth finder. The section that needs to be rewired will be underwater so just looking to fix it and make it waterproof again. Thanks for any ideas
I have successfully repaired them so it is fixable.
-trim back the cable covering about 2" on each end
-using a pointed object unweave the coax shielding on each end
-trim back the inside center conductor covering about 1" on each end
-slide one piece of shrink wrap tubing over each end, one piece a bit longer than the other
-twist the center conductors together so there is about 1/2 inch of wrapped wire, trim excess and solder them
-cover this center conductor with liquid electrical tape, will help prevent a short
-put one layer of electrical tape over this once the liquid tape dries
-twist the coax shielding together and solder, keep this connection as small as possible so the tubing will slide over easily
-cover this shielding with liquid electrical tape
-when the liquid tape is dry slip the shorter shrink wrap tubing over the connection and heat to shrink
-slide the longer tubing over the connection and heat to shrink
Last step I would recommend is to put spiral wrap cable shielding over the cable (can get it at NAPA or Wal-Mart) to prevent future nicks.
Solder the wires back together and use underwater well-pump heatshrink with the glue that oozes out to cover the connections. Its usually available right next to the pumps in the hardware store. The stuff is still working fine at 240V under 20' of water after 4 years in my backyard.
