Does playing a radio while fishing scare fish? I was wondering if the vibration from the sound bothers the fish. Thanks for your thoughts.

Rap and country music are a definite no-no. Bass like country but walleye are more refined.

eyedoktr,
guess it depends on what part of the country ya fish in. Down here in Kentucky, the 'eyes just love a REAL country song! None of that bubblegum sissy stuff, though. http://www.klondyke.net/whome/
ya'll take care!

I have to agree with boatnut on this one. I have witnessed through my aquaview, while playing country in the boat, a real shingding going on under my boat. Beer and ciggeretes also broke out. Sorry, I NEED to fish................

I don't know if the tunes bother the fish, but I can assure you that it bothers other people fishing near you. I found this out on lake Mille Lacs. It was a few years back and it was during the wave wackers tournament. I knew someone who was fishing the tournament. My gal, another friend and I went along to watch the weigh ins and also to fish. The fishing was slow and the lake was glass and about 90 degrees. It was about midday and we were keeping out of other peoples way.(fishing the outer edge) Were were playing a little country music, Waylon- God rest his soul. Not very loud but I guess the music carried well over the calm water. We were just enjoying the day. At the weigh in later in the day, my buddy who was fishing the tournament said he almost had to restrain one fella that was going to punch my lights out for playing music while fishing. I had no clue it was bothering anyone. I wish he would have said something at the time. I guess I learned a little lesson that day. Maybe he just didn't like country music. I know that the are a lot of guys and gals here that fish these tournaments regurlarly. I know that the competition can get pretty fierce. I have heard of one incident where one fella tilted his motor up and backed into another boat that was fishing "his" spot. I'm sure that was an Isolated incident. I'm sure most people at the tournaments get along great, but is there some bad apples out there. After the weigh in at the Wave Wacker tournament it kind of gave me a sour taste about tournament fishing.

Don't let it get you down. There is always somebody who "owns the lake" and will "show you" in all crowds. (sarcasm)> Of course, a bad day on the water was simply your fault that day. His fish locating was not the problem. And you know, there were a lot of other areas for you to fish, you just wanted to wreck that tournament to keep the fish to yourself!

Too bad you were enjoying the day so much, that you didn't know all that was going on!

One punch gets thrown at a tournament and it possibly loses that lake for a long time, not to mention iritating the locals, law enforcement and the DNR.

Really though, it had to be your music choice, didn't it?

I was out fishing with two buddies last weekend. The day was nice but fishing was slow. After 3 hours of nothing, we cracked open some beers, got out the sandwiches, and I put some Pink Floyd on the stereo. Within 10 minutes we each caught a Walleye. Didn't catch anything else but I found it amusing considering how upset one buddy was that I put the music on. We're going out tonight and he made sure I was bringing some CD's.

When my buddies and I go ice fishing on Lake of the Woods and we rent a sleeper, it's a requirement to bring a deep cycle battery, CD player and tons of CDs. Throughout the years, playing Led Zeppelin turns on the fish everytime! One year a house next to us could not catch a walleye, and we couldn't keep them off the hooks. Once the music died, so did the fish. It was really weird.

I always play music in my boat (not loud), unless I am in a tourney or I am near too many people. It helps me concentrate on the fish :)

Chuck,
That's hilarious!! Because I have found that if we are listening to the radio while fishing and a Led Zepplin song plays, we have a boost of luck. This has happened so many times, it's traditional to pay extra attention when Led comes over the airwaves. Playing a Zep CD does not seem to help as much, it has to be on the radio. Pink Floyd and Boston also seem to help the fish bite.

Like many people, I enjoy listening to the radio or a cd while fishing. Never loud enough to disturb my fellow boaters. I have never noticed a negative effect from music, even when played at moderate levels.

Once while fishing, we were listening to some Boston (my personal favorite), and my friend asked me if the music might disturb the fish. I answered, "Well, if the fish don't like like Boston, then we don't want to catch them" We both had a good laugh.

I also find it enjoyable to listen to a Twins game, or listening to the Vikings (blow it, again, and again) while fishing.

I can see why obnoxiously loud music might be bothersome to other fisherman, and I have been witness to some pretty outrageous music levels from other boats. But, there is nothing wrong with listening to music, at appropriate levels for your surroundings. There will always be people who are hypersensitive to any music whatsoever, these are generally the same people who overreact to just about anything they can find to complain about. Show some tolerance, some good judgement, and you will be a much happier person, catch more fish, and we will all benefit.

I can't wait for the upcoming release of the new Boston album!! Almost as much as Minnesota fishing opener.

Backwater,

Isn't "Rap Music" a oxy-moron??

So who is the official in charge of deciding whether or not something is music or art? Is that you?

I have found that walleye are fond of "Southern ROCK" with the occasional Lou Reeds tune near spawn. Walleye are rockers but not head bangers like them Muskie's.

Catfish, well they are darn fussy about their music, even more so then them high falootin grass carp can be.

Spring and fall the cats are solid "ENYA" listeners with the occasional nocturnal bouts of Celtic melodies, bagpipes, or Bach.

Summer the SUMO cats are hard up for John Prine, Ian Hunter, Emmy Lou Harris, and Foghat. But for a sure thing for cats during pre-spawn, ease on into the Lou Ralls and the big SUMO Mama's just get funky & go all-wild.

Fish are funny that way, don't ja know.

:D

I put a CD player in my boat last year and everyone thought I was crazy! This year everyone's put one in theirs. Who's crazy now. Van Halen to start a tourney, U2 to carry the day and what ever CD my partner pulls out next.

Last summer I was out on Mille Lacs on one of those flat 90 degree days with my 8 year old daughter . We had the tunes cranked , we did get some strange looks but that might have had something to with the the fact were catching the eyes hand over fist trolling crankbaits at about 3mph . Was one of the funnest days we've had on the water . Nothing better than watching the kid trying to crank in a couple hundred feet of leadcore on a ninefoot trolling rod with a 5 pound eye attached.

I have had my best days walleye fishing and salmon fishing (I almost typed salmon in first, woops) when I have been listening to the radio or to CDs on the boat but walleye and salmon have distinct preferences in music. I plan to experiment more this year and perhaps keep a log. good music shortens the time between fish also, or so it seems...

Walleyes like classic rock. They go on a feeding binge when THE WHO is on. Rock on in 2002. JJ

Took mine out I would get so caught up in the music that I have been known to start singing, and then for sure the fish wont bite, the birds stop singing, even the dogs run and hide. The only good thing about my singing was all the free sinkers and cans of soda and beer thrown at me by boats in the area.

Smoke on the Water must really drive them nuts!

It's not the music, it's the vibrations. Fish are effected by sonar waves, dropping things on the floor, shadows, anchors flying to the bottom, boats cruising over head, bad smells, people screaming, Music? Yes.
