How about dropshotting Walleyes. I've been trying it and it works. Does any one else like it . What tips or input do you have? I use 3 inch power minnows.

I agree with you. I use 14/6 Fireline Crystal with a 6 ft 8lb fluro leader. I use 3 or 4 inch Gulp Minnows or 3 inch slider paddle-tails. For weights - 1/8-1/4 oz. I'm either pitching them along the weed edge on a lake or in current breaks on the river. I love drop-shotting.

You can get the same results on split shot rig and tail inflated nightcrawlers. If higher up in the column, go with slip bobber.

I've dropshotted for walleyes before, usually along steep weed edges or steep midlake structures. I like 3 inch flukes and power minnows, and shortened ring worms. Live minnows work well too.

The current breaks in the river are great. I have had pretty good luck drifting ang jiging them also. My wife and I went bellow a dam 3 weeks ago and caught 40+ walleye just dropshoting. Best results yet. I am wondering how live leeches will work? I need to go find out but work keeps getting in the way.

Navionics HotMaps Premium West covers Montana (and 11 other western states including the Dakotas). You can see the list of lakes covered HERE (http://www.navionics.com/HMPremium09LakeList.asp?RegionID=4).

LakeMaster doesn't have any lake maps for Montana.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

FSH4EYZ: You didn't say where you were fishing. If you are truly dropshotting, be on the safe side and check your state's fishing laws. In Michigan, dropshotting is legal in lakes, but illegal in rivers.

From the Michigan regulations:
C) In a river, stream, and drowned river mouth lake* it shall be unlawful to:

1. Have a weight suspended below any hook unless the hook
is on an un-weighted line which is at least 3 inches long.

Dropshotting in any form was illegal in Michigan until 2006. Some other states may think similarly.

FSH4EYZ, Flathead and Holter are the only lakes shown in HD contours on the Premium West chip. It does have the outline and well spaced contours (10'-20') of other lakes in our state but most maps are not practical for using to follow breaklines or fish structure as the contour lines are so far apart. My understanding is that Nav. mapped Canyon Ferry last summer but it is not on the new '09 chip so maybe will be a release on the '10 chip. Just FYI, try to view one before you buy so you know if it will fulfill your needs or not before dropping $100-$150..

I drop shot for 'eyes off and on every year when we go on our trip. I like to use a jig as the weight when it's allowed. Some places have different rules about multiple lures. I haven't caught two at a time yet but here's hoping. If I am using a jig as my weight I like to have two different presentations. I usually start with a grub on the jig and a leech imitation on the drop shot hook to start but I have used minnow type plastics and straight worms as well.

I will shake the drop shot a while then pop it a couple times for the bottom jig. Anyone else use a rig like this?

If you want a High Def map of CF with tight contour lines, wait til the 2010 release from Navionics is available and hopefully it will be included on that card. I'm not sure what their turn around time is from charting to release of product. If I remember correctly the current chip has approx. 10' contours or maybe even more. It does show some of the channels at the south end but the jury is still out as to the accuracy of the charting of the channels. I think the channels move around a fair amount and the old mapping they utilize is not current. I have to input some waypoint info into my GPS tonight, I will scroll over to CF and see what the current map contours are and post tomorrow..

See ya, RJ in Missoula

Scrolled over to Canyon Ferry last night while I had my Lowrance powered up. I have the 2009 version Navionics Premium West chip and it only showes 4 different depth contours in CF. 0', 37', 77', and 117'. Not too useful as a structure fishing device. I will try to find out more with regards to when the CF HD map will be released and post back at a later date..
