My F150 has always bled this black smutty stuff around the plastic cover between the cowl ring and drive unit. It bleeds out around the exhaust pressure relief port and around the bottom of the plastic cover and runs down on to the drive unit.
Where does it come from, how is it getting out of the exhaust system between the power head and the prop? Everything inside there is covered in the stuff.
It has never effected how the motor run or anything and I've been cleaning it out at oil change.
I would just like to know what's up. I've shown it to the tech and he says it's just carbon and proves that the ringfree is working. Hey, it may be a good thing it's going in the trash can on a towel in stead of in the water.
Any thoughts?

I guess I should have left well enough alone when Yamaha had my back with their very low emission sticker on my motor.
Now I went and posted on the world wide web that I send it to the landfill :stick:

No one else has this issue?
My concern is there may be exhaust gases escaping between the powerhead and the oil pan, or somewhere between the PH and drive unit. One would think you could hear an exhaust leak, but I can't. This is the only four stroke outboard I've operated so I have nothing to compare.
I don't have an overhaul manual and I can't tell anything looking at the online parts manual. They only show the exhaust cover on the cylinder block.
I cleaned it all off and within two hours run time it's right back as before cleaning. This stuff is dry so its probably nothing to worry about being a simple byproduct of combustion.
I sure would like to know if this is uncommon to the F150 fleet. I may need to have this fixed before it becomes a bigger problem.

WARRANTY????? If it was dirty after the first 2 hrs of run time I would have taken it back to the dealer.

I spoke to a yamaha tech this morning, he says it's normal for a motor running ringfree.
I guess I'll have to find something else to worry about :)
Thank you,

Bob

1 oz to 10 gal and considering the cost of the stuff, you can rest assured I measure it accurately.
