This year I am planning on running
more harnesses. Key word is planning as I usually run cranks. At least see if I can learn to be better at
using them. I have NEVER had much luck on them mostly because I probably ever
know for sure how deep the thing is using snaps. For some reason I never gained
the confidence to be able to say " I am at this certain debth". I know get the book, I got it but I feel that only gets you close. I have tied up
several harnesses. Some with 2 hooks with the end being a treble and some
single hooks using a squid in different colors. Wondering what kind and size of
spinner blade you use for different debths and why?? There are a lot of different kinds now out there. Each has its place I am sure, but how? I have always heard that
when in deeper water use the biggest blade you have. There are so many blades
out there now. I tried the smilie blades with no luck. Anyone tried them? So lets
see how many of you have some answers to this. Am sure everyone does it a bit
different.

Running cranks and harnesses have a lot in common with speed being the biggest factor. Harnesses will be ran at a much slower speed, I generally run mine between .50 to 1.5 miles per hour. I use the same search pattern as with cranks, running different depths, colors and blade sizes, varying my speed until the fish let me know which pattern they want. Let the fish, not the depth of the water determine the size blade you run. I have caught fish on the same size blade from 2 feet under to dredging the bottom in 40 feet of water. Hope this helps

Harnesses are my primary bait. The key to using these effectivly is fluctuating depths. Dipsy divers i primarily use and i run a few different sizes and lengths of line out before i find the right depth. And the depth can fluctuate as the day goes on as well.

"This year I Plan on running more harnesses" Run them when they work.

"Never know for sure how deep they are running" I have used snaps, bottom bouncers, inline and dipsy's with harnesses - even thought about trying downriggers. I fish though out the year on the big water of Upper/Lower Green Bay from Green Bay to B&LBDN. You can get great depth control with all. Just experiment around and experience will give you that "confidence". Great choice.

"Wondering what kind of spinner blades you use for different depths and why?" Present the spinner blade color/size/shape/dimple/smooth the fish want - I do not change depending on depth. I use a lot of 3,4,5 Colorado and Doc Shelton (Would say Lindy - Hatchets but I am mad at them now)on Green Bay. I experiment around with them until I find the color/size/shape/dimple/smooth the fish want. Dark stained water - might use a chartuese or on another occasion in some clear water, I might use a black nickel, copper, silver or gold in various finishes. Go with what the fish want. Ask your local tackle/bait provider or guide for advice on what is working.
