Just put a down payment on a new ProLine 20' Walkaround w/ a 150 Optimax. Now I have to buy a new finder. I've narrowed my choices to a Garmin 240 Blue or a Raytheon L-470. Any information on either is greatfully appreciated to help me decide.

Go Garmin...Definatly hands down. you will be much happier with the display, power, and quality of the garming. Especially since it is the 240 Blue. I think i posted something about it some where...lemme see if i can find it for you.

Garmin 240 Blue:
-240x240 pixels (nice clear screan)
-four-level grayscale screen, excellent separation and contrast(nice option similar to lowrance)
-waterproof
-500 watt unit (great for deeper lakes, Erie, Ontario, ect)
-Very User Friendly unit from a very good dealer
-Price with ducer: $350

That would be the unit id go for over lowrance and raymarine....

CB, Thanks for your input. I used a Ray on my last boat with pretty good results but have been hearing good things about the Garmin. My biggest concern was the ability to see down deep. The lakes I troll run down to about 135'

If you are looking for a good deep water locator Raytheon makes a lot of equipment for ocean vessels. I would also take a look at a St-Tex 106. For deep water go with a crt then liquid crystal. Crt is like a picture tube in a TV and react much faster then liquid crystal and they pick up fish closer the bottom. I have both, and the only problem is the crt draws more current so having good batteries helps.

If you want top of the line fishfider Look at Furuno. Above all furune is the best. 600L or the 582 are great units. But if you have the toss up between anything and a Garmin...definatly go Garmin. I deal with them all day, garmin has a slight edge over Lowrance in my opinion, just Lowrance is marketed toward the walleye fishermen.

For something in the 300 to 350 range go with the Garmin 240.

I think it's safe to say it's the best bang for the buck in that price range.
