Guys,

I was looking to buy a muskie reel to chase these toothy suckers this fall a little and was looking for a reel to use. The Shimano Calcuttas are nice, but expensive as heck. Has anyone used one of these Abu Garcia 6600 ext? I have found them for around $100 a few different places, but there are some other options. Just wondering if I should go with something else?

Okuma Induron?
Shimano Cardiff?

All three are about the same price.

wow, if you can find a 6600 ext for $100 you'd better buy it. I bought mine for around $180. But, it is worth every penny. By far the best reel I have. It is smooth, great casting, and durable. You won't be dissapointed with it.

The EXT is a great reel. I have a 5600 and 6600, bought this winter on some of the great deals you mentioned. My son and a friend also got the 6600 and both like them very much. Good reel for $180 and GREAT reel for the sale prices.

Mike,

I have 2 EXT 6600's. The reason you can get these reels cheap now is because they have been discontinued. You can take that for what it's worth. They have a gear ratio of 4.7:1. I have not had any issues with mine as of yet. They are smooth operating reels. I paid $140 for the 1st one I bought. I paid $80 for the 2nd. Both brand-new in the box. I couldn't resist the $80 price tag as it was on clearance.

The Okuma Induron IDX-400a has a gear ratio of 5.1:1 and go for around $130. They are quite popular with Musky anglers because of the quality of the reel and the reasonable pricing. I would consider these an excellent option for you consider.

The frame on the EXT is cast aluminum. The frame of the Okuma is machined aluminum.

I do not own an Okuma but I have read on other Musky sites that the service support from Okuma is excellent. Frankly, if I would have checked out the Okuma's prior to buying my 1st EXT, I think I would have gone with them.

I hope this helps you.

Just returned from LOTW and used one of these to throw Double Cowgirls, the lower gear ratio did help pull these big baits nicely. Very pleased with the performance of the reel, only question is how it will hold up only time will tell. My past experience with ABU Garcia is maintain them and don't beat them up and they keep reelin'.
