I'm looking at a used Expedition with the 4.6L V8 and was wondering if I'll have any problems pulling a 21 ft walleye boat (Javelin 21 MSX w/ a Yamaha F225 and dual axle trailer). It's a good deal but I don't want to buy something that's underpowered.
Thanks!

I have the expedition with the 5.4 V8. I pull a Warrior V193 usually with three guys and gear. Your boat is a little larger than mine but unless you live in Iowa or the flatlands in Nebraska I would'nt go with the 4.6 . If you are thinking about it I would take it home and pull the boat a few miles just to test it out. Hope this helps...

My brother had one of these trucks you mentioned. It would not pull his 2 place trailer and snowmobiles very well at all. I am not sure of the weight, but I think the boat would be more. The 5.4 will be much better, Infact, he(brother) traded his in and got the 5.4 and now is very happy.

My wife has a 97 Expedition with the 4.6 that I occasionally use to pull my Lund 1900. I would not recomend it as a regular tow vehicle. It does just fine as a car but towing it is a little weak. I live in the Saginaw Bay area of Michigan where it is flat as a pancake. Even on the flat land it is weak, I cant imagine how bad it could get on hills.

I would not recomend the 4.6 I just traded mine in on a 5.4. The 4.6 is a little weak in the grunt dept. on the highway when you get to the hills and wind and the mpg I think is worse. I towed a 17 Lund.

I owned a 1999 with the 4.6 and now have a 2002 with the 5.4. Big
difference, wouldn't even consider the 4.6 again.

My wife drives a Expedition with the 5.4 and can pull my 619Ranger with no problem. I had a F-150 with the 4.6 in a manual transmission and it seemed that this engine had problems towing. Went to a F-250 with a V-10 and this thing really works well.

The 4.6l is made for soccer mom's not walleye fisherman. Stick with the 5.4l.

My son-in-law's dad has a 4WD F150 with the 4.6L engine. Pulling a 17' Sylvan, it was noticeably gutless.

I traded my '99 F-150 4.6l 4x4 that I was pulling my Lund 2025. Not enough POWER, upgraded to a supercrew F-150 with a 5.4l works without laboring. So much better.

Thanks for the replies! I guess I'll be looking for a 5.4L Expedition.
