My dad used to have this thing you dipped in the water and it told you what color was best for the day and I can't find one anywhere. He used to swear by this thing. Any help would be appreciated.

I've had one for years that we play with. Tells what colors are most visible, water PH, and water temp. Use mine to amuse the boys but it is handy to lower probe down to check water temp at different depths. Dan

Drew,I dont know if they still make them but I have one which is called the Combo C-lector Which comes in its own case and tells you most visible color, temperature, and PH level of the water. It comes with the probe which you put into the water and 50 ft. of cable which is numbered every foot. Came with instruction booklet and vidio tape. I only used it once to see how it worked and have not used it since. If interested in it let me know. E-mail me at rclark6262@netscape.net Coach

Drew,
I bought one years ago, case and all, used it a couple of times and wish I had the $100.00 in my pocket. It's still like new. If your interested, write me at dodaman@pcpartner.net.

My dad had one when I was younger. We used it a lot. I still base a lot of color choices based on what I learned by using the color selector. It's no bs, it works. But remember--color isn't everything.

I too, have used the color-c-lector for many years.
I do believe it helped me catch more and bigger fish.
We would be fishing a brushpile for crappie, catching fish and having a great time. Then the action would just quit. That's when I would get out my color-c-lector and see what color was recommended. I would then search the tackle box for a jig body of that color and put it on. That's when, I would not only catch another fish really quickly but it would be the biggest fish of the day.
The color-c-lector has helped in my big-fish fishing edge over my skeptical boat partners.
I am a believer that color can make a difference and the color-c-lector will always be in my boat as part of my fishing arsenal.
Like Fishguy said "But remember--color isn't everything".

I must admit, it did help with the confidence, but AI think it was a gimmick more than anything else.
It picked a color that us humans thought the fish would like dependant on the light penetration at the depth you lowered it at.
We know enough about what colors do what underwater at certian depths that we now make educated guesses.

I have not seen one of those in years. I think the bass guys use them!

The Color-C-Lector has been discontinued for many years, I think in '84 or '85. Based on what I've seen on other boards that I visit, I don't think they're widely used by bass fishermen or other anglers.
Back in the late '70s and early '80s, a lot of manufacturers came out with crankbaits in colors that matched those on the unit. They sold them in sets with different colors and marketed the sets as Color-C-Lector sets or something like that. However, that marketing campaign was short-lived.
For all you guys who still use them, I say more power to you, we all know how big a factor confidence can be in fishing.

If you want one, I have one that hangs forlornly in my garage after being used just once (to please my wife who bought it for me). Come and pick it up for free. I'll tell my wife I lost it.
