Have never used dipsey divers for walleye or saugeye but am looking into it recently. Will be using them on smaller inland lakes in Ohio, depths ranging from 10-40ft. Need ideas for line choice, leader suggestions, speed of troll, etc. Have mainly longlined troll using crankbaits previously. Thought the dipsey could get me deeper and away from the boat. Ideas on where to obtain a good selection?

My dipsey poles have line counter reels and are rigged with 20 # braided line. For a leader behind the dipsey I use 15# flurocarbon with a snap (no Swivel) on the lure end.

An interesting article on the subject.

Dipsys will get you down but if you want horizontal seperation from the boat, in-line boards are the way to go. Dipsys above 30' depths aren't going to pull out very far. Good luck.

Thanks for the replys and info. What about using mono as my mainline? Any drawbacks besides stretch and line diameter?

We hated Dipsys untill we went to superbraid lines. It's the one place were I'd say they are maost important. The no stretch lets you "see" what happening down there. (read the rods). Line counter reels and so stretch lines are key. Good luck

Larry,
I attended a pro's seminar at Cleveland yesterday and he commented that the use of dipsey's and jet divers on smaller, clearer inland lakes was unproductive as they tended to spook the fish. He said that typically walleyes in bodies of water other then lake erie were not as agressive and tended to be more shy.
I fish an ultra clear lake in Kentucky and have not had much luck with the dipsey's/jet's on walleyes. They do work great for trout though!

Was wondering if anyone else had succes with dipsey's/jets on smaller bodies of water???????

Mike I could see how the divers could spook the fish also but the lakes I'm fishing are no clearer than Erie. I would probally go with the clear/translucent Dipsey. As Wild Bill asked, which superbraid line do you suggest and what pound test? Do you need heavier line to compenstate for the Dipsey? I normally run 10# mono when i longline with cranks.

I run powerpro 30lb test/8lb diameter on all my dipesy and planer board rods. great stuff. You definelty need a superbraid with the dipseys to help read them and make it easier to trip. I've had my share of hangups running dipseys close to bank on smaller lakes so be prepared for some lost tackle unless you are trolling a large "flat".
Supposedly , most of the timber was cut down before impounding my lake but i've had my share of tree branches even in 70 feet of water!

We use Power Pro 30 pound, if you're into salmon I'd go with 50#.

Where does the lure ride in relationship to the dipsey? Does a spoon flutter above it while a crankbait dives below? If I'm ticking bottom while using a dipsey, is it the crankbait or the dipsey hitting bottom? For those of you using PowerPro, do you use the hi-vis green or the moss green line?

Only floating baits could ride above a dipsey .
Deep diver lures do not work well behind a dipsey . They cancel out the dipsey dive by pulling it down too hard .
