NMEA is an interface ability with a computer.

You could hook up a GPS, Locator, radar, plotter and etc... to each other or even a computer navagation station. Usually on larger vessels. But hey, if you have room onboard....

I installed the TR-1 Autopilot to my x-15 the NMEA is the middle man in configuring info between your auto pilot and coordinates in your gps unit. It navigates your boat so you can catch fish and play with rods with out worrying about steering your boat.

I don't mean to sound dumb here but if I hook my GPS to my locator what will that do? Will my locator now act as a GPS?

NMEA stands for National Marine Electronics Association. That group, located in North Carolina, has developed sets of standards by which marine electronics can communicate with one another. It has absolutly nothing to do with computer interface.

If you have devices which have the capability of 'talking' to each other you should take advantage of it. It is not hard to do and it is not hard to understand how it is done. There can be significant advantages, particularly on a small boat, of doing the interface. What you end up with in terms of screen display is a matter of what capability is built into each machine, both the 'talkers' and the listeners.

I have been curious to visit with someone who had connected their TR-1 with their GPS. Can you e-mail me at dsamuelson@conpoint.com or share with us your impressions on how such a hookup works on the water. Does it seem to follow your GPS route reasonably well?

As I said, you can connect them to each other and even a Computer if you want to!
