I am thinking about taking a walleye trip to leech lake the 1st week in june. Generally, what can a person expect that time of the year? How deep are the fish and how is the bite?.Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Scott

Early June can be great walleye fishing on Leech lake. Leech has many structure types all of which can produce eyes that time of year. You can find fish in weeds, rocks, sand flats or in the deep basin of the big lake. The other great thing about Leech is you can catch eyes with many of the most popular methods, jig-minnow, spinners-crawlers, crank baits and of course the live bait rig. A wide varity of depths will also hold fish, from as little as 4ft to as deep as 30ft plus.
Leech lakes shore line bite is dictated by wind as is the depths to find fish. windy-shallow or no wind-deep.

It is really up to you what presentation or structure you like to fish, thats what makes Leech a great walleye lake.

Good luck

Scott,
Since, you post - implies that you haven't fished Leech before - and because it is about 5 different fisheries - all in the same lake -
Deep water in walker bay - weedy shallows in portage and suker bay - rice beds and vegation behind bear island - midlake points out in the center of the big lake.
And then all kinds of interconnecting flats, rocky ridges, and sandy shores.

Hire a guide for a full day - to teach you some of each of the different fisheries, - and they ways that they fish these different fisheries.

Then take the rest of your time to perfect - what the guide has taught you. The money spent - will be rewareded many times over - by the extra enjoyment - by learning some of the more successful methods, by an experienced guide.

Although I have fished a lot of different areas and in lakes of all sizes - I still hire a guide for at least a 1/2 day and generally an entire day - when ever going to a large new body of water.

Lakes are simply too big, and too many variations - to relearn every time that you move to a different spot.

I think that you will find that virtually experienced tournament fisherman - will try to hook up with a local fisherman - in the pre fishing week - to help the "experts" eliminate unproductive water.

As the saying goes - 90% of the fish are found in 10% of the water by 5% of the fisherman.

That is proablby quite true - and for the very reasons that I mentioned above.

Take care

Enjoy the wonderful fishery of Leech - and take your camera as well to enjoy the scenery.

Bring your rain gear - to stay dry - because of the likely rain showers and wind that you will encounter at this time of the year on Leech. Be prudent - and don't overestimate your boating skills - Leech is big - and can really develop an "attitude". The good thing about Leech - is that there are lots of islands, coves, corners etc. that a person can go to to get shelter - be safe in all of your fishing expeditions.

Take care

p.s.
This will be a peak time for the crappie bite as well as for walleyes. So, if you get tired of fishing for walleyes - or want a change - break out your crappie gear and pick up some slabs.

I've guided the area for years, Leech can be great or a nightmare depending on you r experience. Where you are staying on the lake is factor if it's windy 9you won't be going far). I'll give you a great deal on a half day/full day. I'll be in the area guiding anyway. joshandstacy@cloudnet.com
