View Full Version : Strange noises in e-tec tilt / trim

RE a 75 hp Evinrude e-tec tiller, there are "screeching / squeaking" noises when I operate the switch. Seems to be coming from the piston system itself as opposed to the switch. It only happens when the motor is in the nearly down position, whether going up or down. After it gets to a certain point away from the transom, the noise stops. I've greased the two zerks on the bar the motor rotates on and worked back and forth several times, but that hasn't helped. The action takes place smoothly and properly. There doesn't seem to be any interruption in function. Any ideas?

Also, anyone know how to check the hydraulic fluid level on this motor? I can't seem to find any drain hole / "access port".

But a dab of grease on the end of the two tilt rams, my Merc was doing that and the grease solved the problem.

~LOL~..........Well, haven't quite gotten around to it yet Paul. Actually, I'm trying to figure out just exactly what "the end of the ram" is. If it's the stainless steel shaft, one end is inside the piston and the other is enclosed in the "hinge" mechanism at the top. There is no truly exposed "end". So, I'm working on it. But I do appreciate your suggestion.

While your boat is on the trailer, support the motor with your transom saver, lower the motor onto the transom saver. The the ball ends of the trim/tilt cylinder rods will become exposed when you hold the tilt switch in the "lower" position a bit longer.

When I but my merc 75 all the way up it shows the two ends that I'm talking about. How is that E-tec any how?
I may be up grading to a new motor, mine is 18 years old, and I love 2 strokes. Let me know how you make out.
