I'm starting to price out a 16' tiller boat with a 25 hp motor. I am considering all the big motor companies. I can't seem to find any info out there on the 25 hp E-Tecs that are on the water currently.
Is anyone out there running them or know where there are any reviews??

I have a 30 hp Etech with power trim and tilt. I have had the motor about 3 months now. I use XD 100 oil and it consumes very little. It is very fuel efficient and quiet. It is smooth and never misses a beat. I troll alot. The low end power or hole shot is excellent. I have my motor on a 16 foot boat. Only one minor issue that was resolved quickly. If you have any particular questions, ask away.

A couple I can think of off the top of my head
What are you getting for speed on average? like alone empty or loaded with company
How's the exhaust at low speeds?
About the oil, do you premix or does it have a reservoir?
How does it start off the rope pull? I'm looking at doing a pull start with manuel tilt. It will be a boundry waters boat, lots of "hard water" up there to watch out for so the motor has to be able to come up if you hit any.
Are the dealers getting top dollar ($3300-$3500) for these motors or is there room to deal?
Any info is greatly appreciated
thanks

As far as speed, my old style flasher does not give any speeds. My boat weighs in at 650 pounds, a battery, gas, ice chest, and my fishing buddy who is over 250 pounds and the boat moves quite well. Alone and you should be fine I guess.
No premixing on the oil. There is a small oil tank on the engine. Have the dealer set the software for XD 100. I use very little oil and that really surprises me.
I troll alot and there are no fumes. My old 25 2 stroke was bad but the Etech is sweet. My partner loves my engine as much as I do.
I have started my engine by using the pull starter and it started easily. I would really think about the power trim and tilt. It reacts very quickly and that is one option you will be glad you selected. The trim control is at the end of the handle. A breeze to use. With or without the power trim, You can adjust the handle to several positions. All in all a nice set up.
These motors are new and supplies are short. In my area you had to place a deposit to get one. Depending where you might be, if there is no demand (which I doubt) you might be able to deal.
If you order electric start, or add it later which is another neat thing about this motor, the motor still comes with a rope pull. My 25 Johnson, which was a great engine, did not have a rope pull with electric start.
It is a very quiet running engine and quite smooth.
When I heard one I had to have that engine. All in all, a nice package. Any other questions, just ask.

Thanks for all the info.
As far as the power tilt goes, we will most likely skip that due to needing to run the motor in the unlocked setting in case a a high speed hard water incident (where hopefully you just break the prop or the skag not the lower unit). As far as electric start goes i think it's awesome that they give you both, we will most likely get it seeing as we need a battery on the boat for the graph, the night running lights, and the bilge.
I thought the 25hp just hit this year I just couldn't find anywhere on the internet that spelled out the release on them. In some things I read it sounded like the 25 and 30hp models were released overseas first

Yes, i think they were. I believe in Australia and proved very good there. I just finished waxing mine again. I understand that handle is used for tilting the motor manually. My dealer says the handle was made that way for that purpose without power tilt. All in all, a great motor plus self winterizing. Need anything else just let me know.

Gutterball - is that the way the small etec power tilt (trim) works? I have not seen an etec up close, but every other motor 'unlocks' anytime the engine is in gear forward - regardless of power tilt.
Engines lock down when in neutral, and reverse - which makes sense. If it didn't lock down in reverse, you'd just lift the motor out of the water. But I believe every motor releases that lock down as soon as it is put in a forward gear.

I don't think there is any "unlock" in forward with PT&T. I think its broken parts!!!

Easy enough to find out if you see the motor, just put the throttle in forward position, and go lift up on the motor.

I've never rented a boat up there with power tilt, so I really don't know if they do unlock during running. I know that I can, and have, pulled a running motor out of the water to avoid breaking things. I figure if the guys that run up there 150 days a year stay away from power tilt so should I.

I've run my motors in the bwca for many years. A yamaha and honda 25hp. Both have power tilt and trim. I can't think of a better place myself for pt/t. I think alot of people up there are running 2 stroke motors and they typically don't come with pt/t, at least the older ones. I've run Sag for over 7 years and I can honestly say that I've NEVER even touched my prop on the bottom. If you are worried about hitting anything, you must be in an area you have never been in? If that is the case, you just go slow, watch your depth finder and use a gps. I personally, would never buy a motor without pt/t. I don't have my manuals at the house here, but would also think that the motor doesn't lock in forward. Could be wrong, but shouldn't be hard to find out. Pt/t is worth it's weight in gold up in the bwca. Good luck, it sounds like a great engine. Junky..............

Junky I appreciate the input. We go in on Fall Lake through Newton and into Pipestone and Jackfish on one side and then go Moose Lake to Basswood on the other. On Fall, Newton and Pipestone depending on water levels there are quite a few rock shoal that come in to play when running. Though the worst is on Fall Lake with the MANY dead heads that pop up due to the fact it was a logging lake way back when.

Hey GB. Never been up that way, BUT wouldn't it be easier to press a button to get your motor up, then to manually lift? Either way, the motor goes up, but it is alot less BS with the t/t. Also with these small motors we have to run, t/t will get you out of the water more once on plane. I guess my point is, why would a person not want it? Unless of coarse it doesn't unlock in forward and then I would see your point. Or maybe the extra cost? Either way, I hope you enjoy your new motor and if I ever buy another, I will also check out the Etec. Take care, Junky.....
