Hi

We seemed to have recovered from the "hatch of the season", and all signs point toward a pretty typical mid-July bite... maybe even a little better. We're still seeing a the walleye prefer a slip bobber/leech combo (yes, even during the daytime) over any other presentation. Some folks are getting fish on live bait rigs and others are pulling crawlers/spinners, but for now the bobber/leech thing is generally more productive. The walleye are scattered from 18 to 34 feet, but are relating to the nearby structures. Use your electronics to locate the fish and anchor up-wind of them. Some of the better spots this week include 3-mile reef, Graveyard, 7-mile flat and Matton flat. Northern action is spotty with a few bigger fish being found, but not many smaller ones. BIG suckers are the ticket here. The muskie bite is slow right now. Smallmouth action is good on the reefs scattered around the south end of Mille Lacs.

Finally, Ole and Sven are fishing, but they haven't caught anything all day. Then, Lars walks by with a huge load of fish. They ask him "excuse me, but where did you get all those fish?" Lars replies," If you just go down the stream until the water isn't salty, there are a ton of hungry fish." They thank him and go on their way. 15 minutes later, Ole says to the Sven "fill the bucket up with water and see if the water is salty." He dips the bucket in the stream and drinks some. "Nope. Still salty." 30 minutes later, he asks him to check again. "Nope, still salty." One hour later they check again. "Nope. Still salty." "This isn't good," Ole finally says. "We have been walking for almost two hours and the water is still salty!" "I know," says Sven. "And the bucket is almost empty!"

Have a great weekend,
