View Full Version : pull cord to electric start conversion
I have a 1986 eveinrude 9.9 kicker that runs great, I have a torn rotator cuff and it is hard to pull the start cord. Is it possible to convert this motor to electric start ? What is needed besides a new flywheel and starter ? Any idea's on cost ?

Rebs,
I owned a few 9.9 Rudes that I ordered brand new with the electric start option. What a pleasure to just push a button to start the engine, and then to have an alternator to charge the battery, so there was enough electricity to run a bilge pump and nav lights.
A long time ago it was over $400 to order up the conversion kit, and it came with a lot more parts than what you think is needed. I don't know if Bombardier currently offers such a kit. To see all the parts that are needed you would need to find an old Rude or Johnson accessory catalog, and there will be a picture of the whole kit with all the parts laid out.
What's nice is you are able to keep your pull start so if the battery is ever dead you can just pull the cord.

Forget it. Trade it in. The start kit is part#0173344 and MSRP is $712.98. The charge kit is part# 0175271 and MSRP is $89.95. You need both to be able to electric start and charge batteries.

Big Crappie is right.
If you buy a new electric start 9.9 it's only a few hundred dollars more than a manual model. It doesn't pay to invest over $800 in parts + labor to convert an old engine.
The old brochures said the electric model was only 5 lbs. heavier than the manual model.
I never actually weighed the 2 models side by side, but I wouldn't be surprised if the electric model was closer to being 10 lbs. heavier than the manual model.
