View Full Version : eastern basin erie
we have been getting eyes drifting the emerald channel with harnesses and trolling harnesses out in front of the emerald channel. mostly smaller eyes but this is where the 11.97lb came from that won the souttowns tourney. These are the resident eyes. The migrating schools I believe are still between Barcelona and Dunkirk.
The lower Niagara River is still full of moss, but should be clearing soon and then the big eyes there should be on the bar
anyone else on WC fishing the eastern basin ?

nice work rebs.
With the MWC Dunkirk coming up in a month or so, I bet there is a "mums the word" out there.
Get this, I was fishing with a couple of guys last week on the FLW Tour Winnebago. Of course, I ask about fishing dunkirk. One guy tells me "50 foot lead, 10 colors, 100 foot backing". Another says to "use an 8 oz snapweight".
YIKES! Looks like I am gonna have to upgrade some fishing gear.

I never did very good with leadcore. I prefer snap weights, dipsies, bottom bouncers and jets.

Rebs- I am heading up this week out of Dunkirk/Barcelona. Will post what I can ( I am in the MWC tourney also-have taken a 3rd and an 11th there the last two times there). Everyone is right about the depth- sometimes 10 color and a 2 oz. snap weight!

why the leadcore and not heavier snap weight, dipsie or jet ?
is there a definate advantage to leadcore ? I don't know if I was doing something wrong or not but I didn't have much success with leadcore, I always did better with the snap weights, dipsies or jets. also used to do good with down riggers but haven't used them in a few years.

Rebs-never did well with riggers-for whatever reason-jets have not been doing me very well the last couple of years either-just lead and dipseys. The good part about lead is that since there is so much line out-the eyes can usually acclimate themselves to the change from deep water to the surface-and I am able to release them where they dive right down-rather than floating on the surface.
I was up at Dunkirk this week and did very well, including a 9.9 amd 10.5 #. Best day was in the rain on Tuesday when I brought 10 eyes to the boat. As usual-everything was deep.

Rebs, we think most of the migrating fish are still in Ohio. Maybe it is just the colder water temp that hae the bite slowed down. we haven't seen the numbers in PA waters yet.

I am traveling from Rochester and looking to fish Lake Erie for Walleye this weekend
Probably launch from the small boat harbor.
Any tips on where to start in the lake?
Thanks

try the mouth of the river called the emerald channel drift with harnesses
troll out in front of the mouth of the river with harnesses or ronowski lures
fishing here has been spotty at best, some days you can get a couple or so and some days nothing at all.
out in front of the windmills was good and is spotty as well
you can try seneca reef and waverly shoal
with the huge flood in cattaraugus creek and sunset bay, the water might very well be real muddy this weekend. if you have canadian license you can fish the canadian side to get cleaner water
