View Full Version : Pinpoint Motor Mount Recommendations

I'm considering a Pinpoint 56" Shaft motor on my next boat and wondered what the preferred way of mounting one is. I see there is a motor mount and a recommended extension bracket for 56 or 60" shafts. Seems like I've also seen them mounted in Big Water Gator Mounts.

Recommendations or ideas? I'm not sure whether I will buy one, just looking at the options.

Thanks in advance

I mounted mine (56-inch) with the PinPoint mount and the extension bracket. Works great.

I also added a sliding mount which allows me to remove the whole thing for storage or traveling with the boat cover on.

SET the hook!!!

Hans,

Can I get by without the extender or just use a big water. I hate to say it, but I'm kinda trying to go as cheap, but functional as possible.

Thanks

Get the Big Water Gator and never look back. Lock solid no adjusting the motor just deploy and fish very fast.

First of all, I hope you remember me. I have really appreciated the advice you gave me in helping me select a boat for MY needs, and not just whatever is the "in" thing.

I agree with the previous posts. Go with a bigwater gator. However, now that Merc owns pinpoint, the price on this mounts has sky rocketed. My local dealer was giving me his cost on rigging items for my new boat, and if I remember the price on this was in the high 200's.

If you do decide on pinpoint and decide to use an extender bracket. I have a used one. Just email me if you any questions about pinpoint. In case you no longer have my email, here it is deboer777@cox.net

Have a good one...

Todd_NE,

All of the new Pinpoint motors are now shipped with Motorguide mounts. They also are no longer made in the 56" size; only 42", 50" and 60". Get the 60" over the 50".

For the 24v models, the 50" comes with the 21 Gator II while the 60" comes with the 24 BW Gator II. Obviously, the BW Gator II is beefier to handle the longer shaft. With the Motorguide mounts, the motor will always be supported by the mount (w/o the mount extending out in front of the bow).

I was actually looking at the Cabela's sale models for 999 in 56". I assume them to be last year's motors. They also have 7500's on sale, but I'm not sure they N'Sync. It also sounds like the stock of new 2002 Pinpoint motors is out pretty much everywhere.

Any comments, I'd appreciate them.

Anybody know if you can purchase the BW Gator II alone yet? I know you couldn't last year, but was told that you would soon be able to. Also, do the holes line up with those of the Pinpoint mounting bracket. I had a MinnKota Autopilot on before the pinpoint, so if the holes don't line up on any of these, that'll be 12 holes in the bow of the boat!!!

Thanks for the info.

Go with the Big Water Gator mount. From day one the Pinpoint bracket was designed wrong. The scissor arms are too short. If you had a 60" shaft without the extender set-up you could not utilize the entire shaft length (I'm not sure how this applies to the 56" shaft, you might be ok with the supplied bracket, but I doubt it). So, they (Pinpoint) came out with the band-aid addition of the extender arm system. My partner had the extenders on his boat last year. One of the small draw backs for him was that with the extenders he couldn't open the rear door of his truck (Lund 1775 Pro V on an Eagle trailer, Toyota 4-Runner), it would run into the prongs of the extender. Also, you look like a mid-evil vessel headed into a ramming war :-). We installed a Big Water Gator mount last week and it's awesome. The big downside was having to purchase a bracket to fix something that was designed wrong from day one.

Best Regards,

I had my 60" extended out in the pinpoint extension arms one day. At the end of the day while loading things in the Pick-up my buddy jumped down off the bumper and hit his back on the skeg of the pinpoint motor. He said he suffered no ill effects but snapped the skeg off the trolling motor.

There is a manufacturing outfit in Fargo ND that manufactures mounts for pinpoints and others. I will go research their name and phone number in my Dakota Country magazine and get back to you with that info.

Another option Todd is a manufacturing outfit out of Fargo called A.I.O. Systems. They make the "ultimate retractable removable trolling motor mount" for minnkota power drives, motorguide gator mounts and pinpoint trolling motors. Now available: 2 pinpoint mounts.

I have never dealt with them but they advertise regularly in a local Dakota Country magazine. Not sure about their prices either but check them out.

I'm sure not happy with my pinpoint extension "band-aid" solution. One can still remove your trolling motor from the pinpoint mount in fact fairly easily but the extension arms fully retracted still extend out beyond the bow of the boat. I have broken the knob used to release or tighten the motor into the mount because this extends beyond the bow. $10 replacement. Good luck in your search.
