I went out to trim up my 75hp Mercury 4 stroke engine after installing the batteries, and the engine only lifted a short ways before stopping.Hydraulic oil was pouring onto the ground, and I noticed a long split in the tilt cylinder. The boat has not been used since last fall and it worked fine then. The trim worked after the last use.Any ideas as to the cause?

I would bet it had water in it and froze ver the winter.

I suspected that as well at first, but the oil was very clear, with no sign of water. In any case,it should not get water in it through normal use.Hopefully my dealer will warranty it.

I spoke with my dealer this morning, and apparently this is not all that uncommon. He suspects a defect with the cylinder casting, and he assures me that it is covered by warranty.

Good news, now have him get it fixed so you can get back on the water. Down time sucks!
