Does anyone make a line counter that is seperate from the reel? Maybe something that could be snapped on a rod temporarily as you are letting you line out? Or maybe something attached to the back of the boat that you could run your line so you could set your legnth as you let your lure out? I just picked up a copy of Precision Trolling and wanted to know if there were other options available other than replacing my trolling reels with ones that have line counters. I would think that there is something like that out there. Thanks

There are few out there.
This one Cableas sells works reasonably well from what I have heard.

I use the shakespear line counter these guys are talking about and it works very well. I think it is more accurate than the built in ones too. Reason: It doesn't matter what diameter line you use or how full your spool is like a built in line counter. Obviously a low spool of line will have a different count than a full spool, so I am happy with them. One more that I have seen and not yet tried is one offered by Bass Proshops, it is in their catalog right next to the shakespear one, if anyone has used that one,let me know how it works.
