I was in Canada last week and for the first time in thirty years encountered a motor problem. As I headed up the lake to an outpost location, I noticed the engine slightly bogging down while at wide open throttle. Once I arrived at my location, which was about 25 miles from where I started, the engine began to severly studder and then studdered for the remainder of the day while fishing. The next day I barely drove away from the dock. Fortunately for my kicker, I drove back down the lake which took 2 1/2 hours, pulled the boat out and drove to a nearby Yamaha dealer. He said I had two bad sensors, which control the gas flow based on cylinder usage. Since the sensors were out there was uninterupted flow of gas causing the engine to bog. Has anyone else experienced this condition with bad sensors??? The marina could not give me a root cause regarding the sensors going out!!! Any information would be appreciated!!

Did it get fixed? Anything mechanical will fail eventually. If it is running right now be happy and fish. No known cause for the fuel sensors to go out here.

I had a similar problem last year lost rpm and sputtered, would not go one plane, Tech found the filter or small screen in the vapor seperator tank clogged. Was an easy fix

Is that vapor filter a prevenative maintenance thing or is it a wait 'til it goes bad thing? What did the tech. say? ..........Thanks, Paul

Thanks for the feedback!!! Initially, the tech replaced filters including two diaphrams and said they were clogged. So, I ran the boat back up the lake and it ran fine for the 25 mile trip. I attempted to start the engine the following morning and it bogged again. So, I called the marine and drove the boat back and they said that when they hooked the engine up to a monitoring system that it displayed 2 faulty sensors and initially this did not show faulty. They replaced the sensors and I was OK. So, following the feedback would this sort of thing get caught during normal maintenance!!! What's the cost these days for a tuneup on a Yammy 200 HPDI?

I have a 250 HPI and i can tell you I have found not too many dealers are up on all that needs to be done to them....... I did a ton of on-line research and found out that the external fuel filter is a good idea. (10 micron) as well as top quality fuel.
It has also been my experience that most boat mechanics don't do much till its broke unless you ask specifically for it.... I have to ask for my spark plugs to be changed, bearing to be packed, and so on. If I just take it in and say service it they pop the cover and give it a quick look and tell me everything is good. I also have to request that the water pump be replaced for them to even think about checking it.
You may have a better mechanic than i do but it never hurts to get then info and be ready to ask questions.
I have to do quite a few more things on this HPDI than i ever did on the 150 Johnson........

Take Care.

What do you consider being "top quality fuel"??? Higher octane, no ethenol??

Non ethanol is usually a higher octane fuel but not all "premiums" are non ethanol. Ethanol is a huge problem for outboards. I've never run anything but non-e and have never had a fuel related problem. Search the web for ethanol and outboard problems, you'll find a ton of info.
