I have a 1997 115 Evinrude Intruder. Was crossing Lake Delavan yesterday, motor @ 4,000 rpms and my Rude just shuts down. Was able to get started again but wouldn't maintain rough idle much less run while in gear. Would run only a few seconds on restart then quit. Won't even start now.
Usually the fuel bulb is always fairly soft. It is now very hard to compress.
I was going to leave on a 2 week fishing trip Friday night. Helps to have a boat on one of those.
Motor has less than 300 hours on it (I have a clock on it.). Never used anything but synthetic oil in it since break-in. Very seldom, almost never run at more than 5,000 rpms.
Your ideas would be much appreciated.

Based on your description I believe your problems are having to do with bad fuel and/or a restriction in fuel flow. The symptoms of how the motor was running are classic "bad gas" symptoms. It can be very frustrating; good luck!

Sounds like a fuel problem to me also. I'd also try replacing the bulb.

Worst case is that it also sounds like symptoms a blown powerhead,(burned piston, bad ring, etc.) Borrow a compression test meter from someone and check it. It's a quick 5 minute test. All cylinders should read aprox equal PSI. If one is bad, will show up with way less than the rest, or zero.

Anything under 100 is not good on that engine. I had the same thing happen to me, scored all the cylinders. Can you say "rebuild" time? Sorry to be so bleek but it may be time to repower.

You were right on. Problem was the valves in the fuel bulb. Mark, what you were thinking was exactly what I was thinking. Glad it wasn't anything major. Leaving tonight for a two week fishing trip in Mikana, Wisconsin on Red Cedar Lake.
