View Full Version : Do big nightcrawlers eat little nightcrawlers?

I've had a mix of large and baby sized crawlers in a crawler box. Maybe upwards of 3 dozen (mostly larger ones) or so in one of those small styrafoam boxes. When I put them in there, I had a count and several (4) were small. I thought I'd keep them in there and someday soon, maybe the 4 would grow up.

I dumped them out the other night to mix some crawler food in with the bedding. The little ones were gone. The larger sized crawlers were plumped up and huge. ARE they eating the little guys??

There was still plenty of food mixed in with the bedding for them. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Just think of the size of the walleye your gonna catch with that worm!! If it does`nt eat the fish before you get it to the boat. You better take a baseball bat with you when you fish with that worm, and keep looking behind you, it might sneak up on you. Wiredog

This thread is pretty amusing!

Maybe they were having a little party in there, doing a little :boozer:

The smaller guys started to look a little tasty through the beer goggles. Try a nibble, take a bite or two ... oops where did they go?!?

Of course we all deserve a :fishhit: for completely ignoring the original question.

Risto...
It is the sombre, age old story, usually hidden in the bowels of the macbre.

But. like the Donner Party, to the crawlers survival looked almost hopeless...
There was no chance for escape.....
....and their ONLY chance was to SURVIVE as long as possible and hope for rescue to come.............

The only hope was CANNIBALISM!!!!

Muh huh haaa haaa.

HOLY COW!!!

That would take like a 12 hook worm harness to fish that thing. Could you imagine what would go through the walleye's mind when they saw one of those things being pulled through the water?!?!

You know I saw a documentory on giant earth worms, i believe it was called tremors, biggest darn worms I have seen:laugh:. I think they would be great bait for that crazy zandor that was nibbling on people in europe. So I want to know what are the odds, the zandor or the worms? I will vote for the worms

I gotta go out and get some bigger hooks. Sheez! the bigger ones are getting bigger and some of the smaller ones are missing their tails now. Won't even have to pinch the tails off those when I go slow deathing. I'm feeding them for cripe sake, why cannibalize??

I figured it out. Ma and Pa are eating the kids so they won't get eaten by mr. walleye. More protien in the kids than that crappy corn meal supplement I'm feeding them.....

Been washing the bedding off (I wash 'em off in the lake) half a dozen or so crawlers and put them in leech tamers before I hit my spots. Then throw the leech tamer on ice. Gets 'em pumped up a little bit. Those crawlers that I don't use during the day get thrown back in the bedding at the end of the day. THEY don't want the kids getting treated like that. Stinkers.

Next trip. Parents and kids get separated. Two different boxes. Kids stay home in the box in the fridge.

By the way who moved this to the motors forum T-Mac??

I dug up some nightcrawlers up north in our garden this weekend. They looked like the wrong kind of crawlers though. I just backed away real slow...
