I recently noticed a recall for my 04 Honda BF 150 on the Honda marine site. Specifically there is a possibility that the shift arm may break allowing the motor to start while still in gear. Has anyone had this problem? The local dealer has checked this out with Honda and told me that there has not been an incident as yet. So why the recall? I purchased the boat from a private party in 06 and it had dealer stickers on the boat from the MSP metro area so when my local dealer told me his check of the motor serial number showed it was a European Honda I was surprised. This fact will complicate coverage for recall warranty cost big time. So any way I would like to take a look at the shift arm in question, the dealer told me there will be a white dot on it if it has been changed by the previous owner. Can anyone tell me where it is and what it looks like the local dealer wasn't sure?

The white dot is a dot of white paint on the shift arm. I hope that does not sound sarcastic.

The shift arm refers to a black plastic bracket (shift arm) that the shift cable connects to. Fairly easy to find. Remove the cowl and follow the cables from the (control box). The shift arm will be just behind where the cables enter the engine. You could also have someone shift the engine while you are looking in the general area of the cables and you will be able to see the shift arm move. Then just look for a white dot of paint. If white you are good to go.

If not I suspect you will have to just by the arm and install it. You could also ask the dealer you purchased the engine from to help you out.
