I'm set to replace shocks on a 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 pickup. What manufacturers and models have you had good luck with? 5% of the miles are towing a 17 lund and the rest are highway with a fair amount of driving our wonderful western two-tracks and logging roads. Any help is greatly appreciated.

i think the easiest way to anwser is to go with whast you can afford, you can get some good shocks and they arn,t that costly i wouldn,t go to anyplace like midas or pep boys i would find the local garage and stop there see how they treat you and talk to some of their customers, by all means stay away from the fast food garages unless you have money to throw away, take it from experience.

You cannnot go wrong with Bilstien

If you decide to go that route, let me know and I can get you the info on the place where I purchased mine last year after alot of price searching on the web.

A no-brainer. Get Bilsteins. I put them on my 2001 Silverado and it rides like a Cadillac, even towing a 6400# 5th-wheel RV.

One other note- for the driving you describe, I would recommend the Heavy Duty over the Sport shocks. The Heavy Duty are slightly softer than the Sport series.

Bilstein are good - but I have Rancho 9000 with the in cab adjuster - can make it ride any way you want - or manually adjust. Had 5000's on another and were also good.

old man Emu on my Jeep - also good - figure no mater what you get what you pay for.

I just put a set of Bilstien HD's on my Silverado and I'm really pleased. I also put on a set of Michelin Cross Terrain tires and the traction those tires provides is simply unreal.

Bilstien; 120,000 miles (since new) lots off-road, still 100%. Excellent ride.

You should be spending more time fishing and less time worring about which types of shocks are going to be best for you. Any quality shocks will be just fine for your use. When you start doing alot of off road 4x4 we can talk.
