Has anyone on the forum swapped out the cable from an electric winch to a strap? I purchased an electric winch from Bass Pro. I really like the ease of operation. It makes it great for one man to launch and load a 621 Ranger. I have one problem with the winch. The cable will start to intertwine(SP) with itself when a load is put on it. I want to replace the cable with a regular strap. Can anyone give me some advice on how to do this?

Call the winch company, they make that winch with a strap also. Have`nt switched mine yet but most likely will. Wiredog

Wiredog,
Thanks, I never thought of that. I wonder why Bass Pro only sells the winch with the cable?

Been a spell since I did it but believe I just fastened the strap around the drum with a small bolt (thru the strap twice that is) and wound the thing up. I've never had occasion to pull the entire strap out clear to the end since so I suppose that might be a potential problem if I did. Mine seems to work just fine this way.

Mike,
That is exactly what I thought of doing. I only extend my cable out about 6 foot max and most of the time it is only 3-4 feet. I am waiting to get the boat back from Cabelas(annual service) and I will give it a try. Will let you know how it works.

OK Guys,
I switched the cable to a strap on my electric winch from BPS. I had to hammer out the cable on the drum. The cable was forced into a hole on the very side of the drum. So I drilled a hole thru the center of the drum. At that point the drum is approximately 1" to 1 1/4" in dia. I then punched a hole thru the strap doubled over and inserted a 1/4" X 1 1/2" hex head cap screw, using a flat washer on each side of the spool. I bought the strap from Cabelas. 2 inch wide X 20' long. I then just wound up the strap and reinstalled the winch on by Ranger Trailer. So far it looks and works OK. Tomorrow I will give it the boat launch and load trial.
