View Full Version : 21 Tempest vs 19 Enertia

I am currently running a 19p Enertia on a (95) 690 Ranger w/ (03) Mercury 150 HP XR-6 and I am very happy with the combination. Right now the the boat runs full throttle (light load) @ 52-53 gps on a good day btw/ 5550-5600 rpms., and has great holeshot.

I'm looking for a spare prop, and wondering if my motor could turn a 21 pitch prop? I've heard good things about the Tempest props from Merc, but also have read that they are harder to turn than the slightly smaller dia. Enertia props.

Any guesses as to what I could expect if I switched to a 21 pitch prop? I'm presuming my rpm's would drop significantly and put me out of the most efficient running range for my engine. Not too mention that I would probably lose some holeshot too.

Will I notice any gains as far as top speed, or would I be better served just looking for a 19p tempest? Not looking to shell out $300 bucks on a spare prop that will not give me good all around performance.

Welcome any and all advice or input. Thanks...

My guess would be that you couldnt turn a 21 tempest. Even a 19 tempest would turn harder than a 19 enertia...i believe. I have a 21 tempest but i need another 500 rpm, i think a 19 tempest or rev4 would serve me well. I figured a 19 enertia would spin to high for me.
Need Propmann's expertise here tho.....

Interesting Neb, I'm running a 21 Enertia, and was thinking about getting a 21 Tempest, I'm happy with the Enertia, but would like to have a spare prop on hand, and I thought the Tempest would be a close comparison to the Enertia. decisions, decisions.

My boat when I bought had 21 Enertia and it would hit the rev limiter, guys with my boat typically run a 21 Tempest or 21 REV 4, so I would rec trying a 19 Tempest,

You won't be able to turn a 21 tempest. A tempest 19 is a pretty tough prop to turn with a 150 also you'll probalaly lose 200 rpms going to a tempest 19. If i were you I would get another enertia or a powertech RAS 19, that prop also performs well on 150s.

Sorry to hijack but I have a question for propman (and others) as well....I am running a 19 Tempest on a 1850 Tyee with an F150. Most times, depending on load, I can hit my rev limiter. Would like to try a 21P Tempest - how much RPM reduction can I expect?? I get out of the hole great now - how will the pitch change affect that as well - I presume it will hurt a bit?? I am currently running about 42mph GPS WOT with a full load - me 280, wife, and 3 kids.

No prop shops/dealers around will let me sample props so I'd like to know before I drop the $$ on a new prop.

Thanks!

What kind of rpms are you running wide open? You also might want to consider having the prop reworked by a custom prop shop

I believe I am hitting the limiter....so say 6100 or so if I trip right up.

If you the math your prop slip is about 22% which is very bad. If you reduced your prop slip you should be able to get high 40s. You should get either a Powertech OFS4 in a 19 pitch or a REV4 in a 19 pitch. A 4 blade will reduce your prop slip and will lower your rpms a little too.
