Hey, just got done looking at a very nice 2001 Lund Fisherman w/150 opti. The only issue was that his Smart Craft Gauge on the dash was reading that there was water in the fuel line. He said that he dumped the fuel out into a jar and water did not separate from the fuel, so the gauge has a faulty reading.
Just wondering if anyone knows about this problem, or if it can be serious?

according to the 2001 150 Opti owners manual, there is an under-cowl water filter/separator that has a sensor back to the warning system, which is probably what the SmartCraft gauge is displaying. So,,,,,, unless he removed and drained this filter, that may be causing the alarm. Or, it could be a bad sensor.

I think he said that he removed both the filter and the line. And the filter showed no water separation. I'm leaning towards the sensor being faulty....... How much does something like this cost to replace?

sorry man, don't have a clue. If you can get the serial # off the engine, a dealer (or Mercury parts online) should be able to get you a cost for the sensor.

...and in the box with the filter they include the sensor that screws into the filter's lower end (as installed). I'm not sure if this is the water sensing one, but if this doesn't fix it then probably the dealer's computer would be the quickest way to figure out the problem. The wire that attaches to the sensor on the filter has a connection that has to be put on with a bit of force before it engages properly, and maybe this is either not seated or was damaged/loosened when he pulled the filter. In all fairness to the owner, this connection is hard to get at to remove easily.
