only 10hr on f150 counter balancer broke, does this happen often? warranty is going to pick it up but is this a regular problem with the F150?

Must be, mine did it at 15 hours. Yamaha replaced the powerhead and its been a good motor so far with 160 hours. What year was it manufactured?
PS: I think this is an issue with old stock motors. Mine was an 05 unit sold new on a 2007 package.

This has been a known problem for several years, especially in the early models. Normally there will be a whining sound when running before it comes apart. If you have one, see your dealer to have him listen to the engine.

I was told that breakage had to do with quick throttle adjustments and that they were nylon.

My F150 is a 06 that I got on a hold over Skeeter this spring, My old ourboard was a 150 vmax and I hit the throttle hard on that one and it was always solid, So do I have to be soft on this one?

Mine came about the same way. It was an 05 on a new 07 ranger.
Yamaha must have had a lot of pre 07 motors that had something wrong with the materials in the composite gear within the balance unit.
I was told my motor had all the upgrades when I bought it. It was certainly upgraded after they replaced the powerhead.
I'm guilty of changing the oil and filter's a little premature, maybe. I've always run it with ringfree. So I guess I do pet it.
I always let it get hot before going full power, and I never slam the throttle. Yamaha told me to run it hard so I pretty much run it 4500 to 4800 rpm all the time.
Where I regularly fish, the lake is about thirty miles long between the two area's I like. I have run that thirty miles a few times, non stop, at wot and it has never missed a lick.
I can't believe what I'm about to say after all the dust I kicked up "here" when I was where you are now, but here goes; Let Yamaha fix it. They will take good care of you. You'll come away with a good motor.
Good luck.
