I bought an 02' CL Sportfish that came with a snap cover. The owner said it ripped once when he trailered it and that it was not meant for trailering, yet I see the same boats with what appears to be the same cover trailering with it on all the time.

Anyone know the scoop on if this cover is meant to be trailered or not?

If it has been outside in the sun and is the orginal cover it will fall apart. I have a 1998 but store it inside and the cover is still in good shape and I travel with it all the time. Most factory covers on that model only last 2 to 3 years outside. You may need to get a custom cover that is built better and will last you longer while the boat is being trailered.

Good luck.

I have a 2000 Sportfish and the cover is in pretty good condition as well but also has been stored inside when not in use. A few snaps have come off but overall in very good condition.

I also have a 2002 Sportfish 1850. The cover is made for trailing.
Mine is like new, but it is stored inside.
As pointed out, if it is weather beaten you may not want to trailer with it.

Thanks guys. I am sure the boat sat outside some, but not sure how much. The cover does not appear to be very weathered.......and is in good shape. I store the boat indoors, so I guess if it rips no big deal and at least I will know.

I have a 2003 Sportfish. I have trailered the boat and cover typically at 65 to 70 mph about 18,000 miles and the cover is still near perfect. It usually is stored undercover, so it has not experienced sun damage.

I have reinforced the cover at the innermost snaps on top of the transom. I also have reinforced the around the hole in the bow area supported by the veritical cover support pole. What occassionally has happened at that hole is the cover blows over the tip of the pole and the cover comes down onto the pole tip and punches a hole in the cover. After reinforcement that doesn't happen. It cost me about $20 at auto interior shop to stitch reimforcements.

The factory snap-on cover fits perfectly so there is no flapping, which is the key to cover longevity.

I trailer my boat all the time with it on (2003 1800 SuperHawk) and my trips average 250 miles each way. A couple of snaps have ripped through and I added extra in the bow. As far as the poles-I drilled a small hole in the plastic tip, drop a flat washer over it and put a pin in the hole. Problem solved.

Crestliner covers are made for trailering. The reason for most cover failures on boats that I see here, are from the covers not adjusted to fit tight. The poles must take up all the slack, if you do have it tight, the wind catches the loose material and will rip the cover in no time.

So, poles in while trailering is what I am gathering. I would have gone without had I not posted this thinking they would have ripped through!!
