I'm finally getting a chance to break away from work a few days and am wondering which area holds the best chance of catching walleye this coming week. Islands area? NW of Kelley's? Lorain? etc.

I was thinking of heading to the islands and camping on Kelley's or South Bass, depending on availability and fishing that area, but am not sure if the fish are moving east towards Loraine/Vermillion or not.

Any advice welcome.

I'm not sure about the island area but there are definitely fish from the Ruggles Reef area thru Avon point (west of Vermilion to east of Lorain). I can't help much on camping facilities in the areea.

The sand bar between Lorain and Vermilion is on fire right now.

The area around Rattlesnake Island, just west of South Bass island has ,and still is, holding a lot of smaller eyes. Regular limits both trolling and drifting. Can't miss the pack.
The Huron/Ruggles area is holding fish, but it's been spotty and harder to find the active "pods". Boat traffic does scatter the fish in the shallows - especially on the wknds.
Vermilion/Lorain sandbar area has really started to fire-up. 33/15 area and north by the weather buoy at 39/28 is also holding good numbers of active fish. Can't miss the packs.

East Harbor State Park on Catawba Island has a really nice campground. Last year on a three day trip in August, my brother, my son, and I camped there but chose to drive from there over to Vermilion so that we could launch from there and make the run out to the sand bar. Since we drove over in the morning, on day one we could only fish the afternoon. We chose to launch at Mazurik's and run up to Kelley's Island Shoal. We got nine that afternoon but on the sand bar the next day we limited out by early afternoon. There might be a campground closer to Vermilion with reasonable camping prices but East Harbor is quite nice. Driving to Vermilion from there was not a major problem for us.

Thanks for the great suggestions. As soon as the weather forecast calls for a few stable days, I'll be on my way. See ya on the water!

This site is on the Vermillion River, has a boat ramp with access to Lake Erie. I have been there and it is quite nice.
