we just bought a new boat with a 175 pro xs and the motor runs awesome but she is a little loud at higher speeds I had a 150efi for 10years and It was a great motor but this pro xs is real nice I love the powerband much better than the efi .they use the 225 ho 's on the boats on our water ski team and they love them also but I do think this merc motor might be better on gas and oil good luck

The Evinrude E-TEC is a lot more economical on oil than the Merc, by a large factor. Fuel economy will be fairly close overall at the end of the day, but one may be better than the other at a particular speed.

Since these are performance engines and you will probably drive them as such, economy is not much of a concern.

The Evinrude HO is super quiet like a 4-stroke, you can hold a conversation at speed, unlike the Merc which is pretty loud in comparison. There is also the air compressor chatter that is audible, too, with the XS.

If the etec is better on oil I guess my next question is ,how much for a jug of oil?iam not sure which oil they take, because I go thru alot of merc oil now but its only $16 a jug

Might want to ask

If your engine is a Opti, then you should be running Merc Premium oil and the Merc additive in every tank of fuel. This is stated in the owners manual and is a carbon reducer. using the correct oil and the additive, the cost of oil may put the opti slightly higher but having to deal with the additive really sucks.

FYI

A new 225HO can use any quality TC-w3 rated oil, just like a Merc. The Merc Premium Plus is a very good oil as is the Evinrude XD-50.

Evinrude also makes a fully synthetic performance oil, but like all full synthetics, it is more expensive than regular oils.

I have my etec programmed for XD 100, which is about $40 a gallon. If you program it for the cheaper XD 50, it just uses more oil. Compared to my DI evinrude, the etec uses 1/2 the oil, so i don't think it is any more expensive to put oil in because of how little it uses. Less time adding oil to the resovoir too!
