Mast system springs

I have just made a mast system and am wondering how helpful are the two springs attached to the pullies. What might be the reason for having them. Any comments would be appreciated.

The basic idea of the springs is to keep the slack out of the main line when the boat pitches. I made up my own system from mostly Big Jon parts and a coat rack pole. It doesn't have the springs and works quite well w/o them for the limited amount of use I give it.
