View Full Version : Mounting HB 798/997 to sport track/ram?

I'm in the market for a new sonar/gps and I'm going to get either a humminbird 798 or 997.

I had an idea that I would mount it on a ram mount attached to a Lund Sport Track mount.

On my classic 16 ss, I thought that I could slide it from the console, to the bow (or at least close to it) as long as I keep some extra length to the cords.
This would save me from using two ram mounts and disconnecting everything every time I wanted to change it's location.

Does this sound like a feasible/good idea or is there something that I'm not accounting for?

I figured that the cords would be tight when the unit is at the bow, and they would have to be coiled up when the unit is next to the console.

Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions!

I would start with the RAM mount, they have one especially for the 700 and 900 series. The height adjustment and pitch adjustment will be handy no matter what.

The trick is the wiring, and management there of without it getting in the way.

You may consider enclosing the wiring in a flexible casing that emanates from a center point on the length of the slide you may use. That flexible casing would better lay along the outside track of the floor. The casing used in auto and marine installations can be bought in lengths up to 10' at most auto supply stores.

I thought that would be a good idea also and I tried it with a HDS 8 and a ram mount , It was out far enough with the ram it wasn't really very solid and bounced quite abit even in calm seas . So I went with out the ram with some success. I also tried a a 332c on a sport trac in the bow and had the same issues with it moving alot when we were underway... I went with the ram on the floor without the sport trak.. I beleive that the sonar could be mounted directly with out the ram and wouldn't bounce as much but wouldn't have the flexibility that the RAM provides...

arh... I worried about stability. So it's either ram or sport track but not both...

Bummer. Maybe I should think of getting two cheaper normal 2d finders instead of one large SI one....
