If I would buy a HD5 and a HD7 and connect them with ethernet cable, would both units read off one Navionics or Lakemaster chip installed in one unit? Or would I need 2 chips. Could I have one Navionics chip in one and a Lakemaster chip in the other reading the same lake? I would think that would work. Thanks.

Each unit must have it's own chip. There is no network for sharing maps. It has to do more with copyright protection. By buying a mapping card are basically buy a license to view the maps on a single device.

acar is correct. and you could have a nav card in one unit and a lakemaster card in the other unit
