Looking at getting a new rod. Need one that allows me to feel a 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz jig down to 40ft or so. Looking for what most are using for jig fishing?

Length?
Weigh?
Action?
Line weight?
Just had a casting rod built. Its a 7'9" blank. Its going to be one nice rod. Its rated for 15lb to 40 lb line, 2 oz to 8 oz of weight. had it made for Stripers and catfish.

Now looking for a Spinning rod it will be for Sauger fishing.

All the aforementioned blanks are outstanding. Ask your builder to take a look at the Batson blanks.

XSB 822.5
XSB 843
XSB 844
ISB 802.75
ISB 822.5

Keep in mind there is no standard in the industry for line and lure ratings. Your builder will be able to explain that to you. For what your doing, my favorite is the XSB 822.5. I built mine with a Telexium handle with hardwood end caps and the new micro guides. It is very very light and extremely fast and sensitive, it has become my favoite rod.

On another note, if you are in no hurry, Gary Loomis is back in the business. Scuttle has it that he will be making blanks for Custom builders only. His new company is North Fork Composites. They are still working on the web site. If you're familiar with the Loomis rods of the past, you will have an idea of the quality and of course the price.

Selecting a rod is almost as much fun as buying and setting up a new boat!! Have fun and let us know what you end up with.

I have 2 matched 7'6" Built by Brian Althouse of feathercast rods and lures. He is up around Tipton Indiana and builds some sweet rods. He uses alot of Batson blanks. We give several away last year in the HWA series and the guys really like them for jiggin. I had the titaniu recoil guides on mine and love them. You jsut cant get a finer rod for the money in my opinion. Look him up he has a dot com under feathercast. he pours and colors jigs of all sizes and shapes too.

I apologize for not mentioning Batson. They are very good blanks also. shikari used to make an excellent jigging blank, but the company has been bought by ATC, and I haven't tried out any of their new blanks, so I'm unsure if they meet or exceed the performance of the past blanks (its a pity as they had a very nice line of fly blanks also).

the lamiglas XMG blanks were also very nice. I think they discontinued many of the models, but you may be able to find what you need still.

ATC has went the way of Shikari. They are out of business. There are a few of their blanks out there if you can find them. Take a look at the Rogue Rod blanks. Some really interesting blanks there also.

Thanks guys the search has gotten muddied up somewhat. LOL Theres so many great blanks out there now days. It boggles the mind when searching for the right blank. But sure glad we have so many to pick from.
Also I have been using an old Browning Tn handle rod for years. Love it I think I bought this rod back around 1987. Its great for 3/4 oz or above. AS I fish a lot of heaver jigs in swift current. But it does not work for anything under 3/4 oz.
Heres the kind of jigs I fish, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v693/ShilohRed/Sauger/Saugerjijgs002.jpg
Then I have other types of heads. Not sure anyone uses jigs this heavy for Walleye but here fishing the rivers in current it takes this type to get down and fish.
