Do most of you guys cover your boat while trailering?
I was told that the cover can flap and rub paint off ths sides.
The cover I got with the boat is nice but it kind of blows tight in the front and flaps in the back. No matter how tight I pull it the cover dosent ride super calm. I have not lost any paint yet and only cover it when its raining on the way out.-- 18 foot lund and the cover that came with it when bought in 2000 is the boat in question.
This has been a question ever since I got the boat thanks for your advice.
I only cover my boat if traveling on longer trips with boat full of extra gear and rain is in the forecast. Otherwise I found it saves on the life of your cover to only use it when needed. Another case would be when you know you are traveling on a lot of gravel/dirt backroads to get to your lake. It will keep all the dust and dirt out until you get there.

I usually cover my boat. The main reason is for security. I have heard of guys having equipment stolen even during a short stop to have a coffee. The top also keeps things clean and dry. I think putting the cover on is well worth the effort and wear on it.
Just make sure the snaps are all done up!

Most likely you received a free cover from Lund that is a mooring cover it is not for trailering it will remove the paint. I have a 2000 Pro V with the same cover and there was a warning not to use cover for trailing. I use it for winter storage only. For normal use I have a snap on trailering cover custom made out of Top Gun material. Keeps the windshield and interior clean and dry and prying eyes out.

Quick question about covers, I am going to have one made next week. Is it worth the extra $$ to get the snap cover rather than the bungee style?
I was just at the dealer this morning looking over my 1800 Fisherman. The cover has the tie-down loops with ropes to the trailer, supposed to be a mooring-travel cover....looks like ##### ! I just got off the phone from the custom cover maker that did the top for my old MR. Pike and told him I'd be by next week with the new Lund to be custom covered. I love that new boat, but I can't beleive Lund would put a cover like that in the market, my opinion.

Adjustable male ends allow tighter, more secure attachment to the boat than bungees. Go with the snaps.

Where does a guy get these custom snap trailer covers made?
About how much do they run for a nice one?
Thanks!

I've got a 1993 1775 Pro-V and, yes, over time the cover will rub paint off if trailered with it on. It rubs on the console, the motor, and the tops of the seats when they are folded down. I made a custom set of seat covers,(one for each seat while folded down), to keep the cover from rubbing through the seat material. So I cover each seat before I put the cover on.
My custom maker said $600.....He hasn't seen the boat yet, we've only talked by phone.

That "Lund" cover is built by Shoremaster. Lund doesn't any build canvas things, they build the boat.
It is an excellent quality mooring cover, made of a material called "travl-tuff" and holds up well for many , many years.
:-) It doesn't look real cool, I agree.

The only time I tarp my boat is when it is sitting in the driveway. I never tarp it while trailering. If it rains, I make sure the plug is pulled. My '93 Lund tarp still looks like new!
Take care,

I would think that a person would care more about their boat looking new rather than if the cover looks new.

I only cover it while sitting in the driveway. I generally have a bunch of rods (and sometimes downriggers) sticking up all over the place, so putting a cover on would be a hassle. I do bring along the cover-- rolled up-- if I'm going to be stopping for a long time or staying overnight, so I can put on the cover and minimize temptation.

walleyeman... What is there to worry about getting abused by trailering without a tarp? I've followed many boats going down the highway at 70mph & the tarp is taking one heck of a beating. If one has a custom snap cover, that is the way to go. If I were to travel a 1000 miles each trip, I would consider a snap on, but it doesn't fit my bill!
By the way, the top of my black merc.'s still look like new also!
Take care,
Brad

snap covers are really nice if well made. If you are in the Northern Iowa/Ill or Southern Minn/Wisc. Try Wersinger/Dunkertons Custom Covers in Waterloo, Iowa.
