I've been reading the posts regarding the Dodge 5.2ltr not performing well for some on this board. How does this truck differ from the GMC Sierra w/ 4.8ltr V8?
Many of the boats discussed in the previous posts as causing problems for the Dodge can and have been pulled by the GMC quite easily in my opinion. Is there something radically different between the two engines or do I just have lower standards as to what is a good tow vehicle? Not trying to cause a fight, but thought my GMC would tow most boats up to and including a PRO-V 1900, now I guess I am wondering a little.
Thanks,

Hello, I have a 2001 Dodge 1500 4X4 5.2 Quad Cab with the towing package. I live in an area with plenty of hills, both steep and long. I always tow with the overdrive off. I have plenty of power to pull my 16ft Sylvan (light boat)except on the larger hills. I just take my time and stay in drive. When I get to the flats I have plenty of power to pull in drive. I very seldom use the cruise when towing, it wants to shift to often. Hope this helps.

I have a Dakota QuadCab 4 x 4 with the 5.2. I tow a Spectrum (Now Fischer I think) Pro Avenger 190. Boat has a 4.3 IO. Fully loaded I do not have any problem maintaining any speed limit as long as I do not use overdrive. If you read your owners manual on your vehicle it may recommend not to tow anything in overdrive. I do notice that if in overdrive, even on flat terrain, transmission will shift on occassion. I travel to upper Michingan from Indiana a number of times per year and have no problms with the hills up North.

Hope this helps.
