You should be able to mount the LX-5 transducer to shoot through the hull. I've never heard of it being done but I don't see why it wouldn't work. You can test it by by holding your transducer against the bottom of your bilge and seeing if you get a reading.
The LX-5 has manual depth ranges so you'll need to pick a deep range, or adjust the depth range on the fly.
The LX-5 is an awesome unit for ice fishing, I use it on the ice all winter long! But a unit with automatic depth ranges would be a better choice for in a boat though, in my opinion.
