Have an old OMC gas can, 6 gal., that hasn't been used in years. The inside contains a black gooey liquid that smells vaguely of old gasoline. It's really a mess. Possible to clean? Or just toss out?

Clean it out, save the stuff and give it to the guy who wants to run his walleye boat on wind!

I would not toss it out. If covered at a landfill it could catch on fire. There should be someone who deals with this. My 2 cents

Sure you can clean it!!!!
Pour what you can in 2L pop bottle (big plastic soda bottle if yer 'Merican)
Pour in some thinner and let sit awhile
Then dispose what you are going to dispose PROPERLY
If you dump it...you'll eat it in your next years fish
Stay off the pipe...and don't forget to wipe.

Rinse it out in the lake when nobody is looking.

How much is your time worth, not to mention your motor? Why would you even consider wasting your time trying to clean it, only to have a piece of gunk (that's technical jargan) potentially get into the carb(s) and bugger up your motor. If the gas is in pristine condition, how is the hose and primer bulb? Were it me, I'd replace the whole setup. Just one guys opinion!

6 gallon cans aren't cheap. Is is compatable for your need? Make sure the hose hookup thingee has a good connection with the hose (no slop or play), if it's bad, price a replacement before starting. Check the gasket on the lid. Drain any liquid, soak in kerosene, dump into oil drain pan, repeat until clean inside. To clean the fuel line inside the tank, pump some clean kerosene through old hose if avail. (remove motor end connector), otherwise do this with new hose & bulb. I would replace the old bulb and hose.
Now your stuck with some dirty kerosene that you put in a suitable vessel. The heavy stuff will settle and you can reuse the solvent if desired. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day if possible, otherwise find someone that needs to start a brushpile. Last choice is to allow to evaporate. Probably not PC but it is the current recommended method for solvent based paint - evaporate dry, toss can in trash.
You might create less pollution by recyling & you might have a better can.

I agree...replace it.
Replace it. Murphy is just waiting out there for you to use it on a day when there is no one else on the lake and it is 5 miles against the wind to the landing.

You can buy a 6 gallon gas tank for $20.
