I purchased a new Lowrance LVR-250 VHF radio for my boat. I have the unit installed with the exception of the GPS option. From what I can tell from the instructions, there is an option to have your VHF radio connected to one of your sonar/GPS units so your radio will provide lat/long.,current time and provide coordinates should a distress signal go out (I don't if many boats are connected to the DSC (I think that's what is called), but I would nonetheless like to connect my radio to my GPS.

I saw a thread back in August about how to connect the radio to a sonar/GPS unit, but it seemed confusing to me (it doesn't take much).

There is short cord with a male plug coming from the radio. Included with the radio is a cord with a female plug on one end and some loose wires on the other end. The wires are color coded and labelled, and the instuctions show where each wire is to go.

The questions I have are as follows:

1. I assume the male end of the radio plug connects to the female end of the included cord.

2. What do I do with the loose wires on the other end of the included cord. Do I purchase a Lowrance connector (is there such a thing? All of my Lowrance cords have come with male and or female connectors already attached. Also, the only connectors I have seen without a cord are the 120 bus ends to complete your network) and feed the wires into the connector so I can attach the lowrance connector to my established NMEA network?

3. If so, do I think plug the lowrance connector into my network, or do I plug the lowrance connector into the back of one of my sonar/GPS units?

4. Does the radio GPS connection go into the ethernet port on the back of a unit.

Any help would be much appreciated. I use my 520C for GPS/mapping and my 110 for sonar, if that matters. Thanks.

Ok.

I spoke with a friendly Reed's Sporting Goods representative who provided me with a start.

He told me the loose wires (blue, green, yellow, orange, etc) on the one end of the female plug cable from my VHF radio connect to the power/data cable on one of my Lowrance units. I would assume you should twist the wires together and cap them.

Here is my dilema:

The power/data cable on my sonar/gps unit has four color-coded wires: blue, yellow, orange and a shield. The loose wires from the VHF radio total 6 wires; blue, gray, green, orange, yellow, black and a metal shield. The manual for my radio says that the blue wire and gray wire are NOT used. The green wire is labelled GPS-; the orange wire is labelled NMEA out+; the yellow wire is labelled gps+; and the black wire is labelled NMEA out-.

I have only two (2) matches from the power/data cable on my sonar/gps unit with my radio unit; yellow and orange wires. I assume you connect the same colored wires (orange from radio to orange from power/data and yellow from radio to yellow from power/data). Where do the green wire and black wire from the radio attach??? The manual does not give a description.

Thanks for any assistance!

On page 11 it's very well explain. Check in you're GPS book also.
