I don't know how it happened, but when I was looking at my trolling motor today I noticed a crack on both sides of my composite shaft that goes from the top of the shaft to about 1/2 way down. Is this a concern? Can shafts be replaced and if so, are they expensive? Will some sort of caulk work?

Thanks for your help!

You bet - this is a concern.
If not for strength - it is certainly likely to allow water to get into the motor and ruin it.

Either send it into Minnkota for replacement - or any minnkota repair shop.

If you were to send it directly into Minnkota - I expect that it would be replaced at no charge. They advertise at considerable expense on the strength of their composite shaft. I would expect that if you have a motor with a cracked shft, they would be extremely interested in getting it back to run through failure analysis.

Don't use it in its current condiditon.

Take care
REW

p.s.
I might guess - that if a short reapir time is required, you might give Minnkota a call - and they might simply do an exchange on your motor - perhaps you could have the two motors cross in the mail.

Thanks REW. I bought it last year along with my boat. I forgot to mention it's a 65lb Auto Pilot with a 60" shaft. I also had a problem with the foot pedal turning right. It would go left, but not right. I had it in to the dealer and it worked for about a week. (And no, I didn't have the cord wrapped around it) You think I should just send it in to MinnKota?

I have seen that as well. A closer inspection found wear spots on the plastic covering of the circuitry under the foot pedal. A crack allowed moisture and water in. Corrosion developed and the contact was lost.
You probably should call the company to see if they will repair it and etc... Then if not, consider a new one.

It is possible to work on it, but not a likely long term fix. After the plastic is lifted, cleaning the contact will restore power to that contact. However, getting the plastic to reseal around the edge of the unit will be very tough. Also, it is possible to coat the contact with a fingernail polish to assist the seal. Pick a good color...lol. Finally, after the plastic is resealed on the sides, the wear needs to be sealed. Try a small piece of shipping tape to cover it. Double cover it for wear resistance. But, it is temporary.
