Does anyone know where I would be able to find muskie lakes in northern Wisconsin that would be fishable with a canoe? What's a good source of information for someone willing to explore some of the smaller lakes?

Try the Hayward area. There are several quality lakes and streams for musky that are small craft friendly. Look at Haywardwi.com as a start for info. Lakes such as the spider chain (also spider @ birchwood), sissabagama and little sissabagama, red cedar river and ...

Also the apple river at Amery all the way to Somerset gives up some good muskies. The son of a friend caught a 50"+ there drifting last summer with excellent smallie and trout action.

Give it a go.

Another good source of informationcomes from Sportsman's Connection, Northwest Wisconsin fishing map guide (northern region).

The Connection has very detailed maps and lake descriptions all in bound form and they are regional throughout the state.

Sportsman Connection

Superior, WI 54880

I use this quite often when going to explore new areas.

Hope it helps.

when you say fishing with a canoe I would think you are talking about lakes 300 acres or less. I would consider the clam lake/mellon area, meaning English, Mineral, Upper Calm, and Lower Clam. these lakes are all under 300 acres and are fun little lakes to fish. mineral has a national forest campground. Day lake is also right in the middle of them and has a campground but is a little bigger, I think about 600 acres? these are all action lakes. Who knows you might even see an elk around clam lake.
