I've mastered the art of tuning most crankbait but when a 4F Hornet needs tuning I can't seem go get it right.I see no eye or bill damage.Any one else experiencing this problem? Thanks for any help!

I use the smallest sdr style hornets and they're fantastic catchers, but eventually they wear out and you just have to replace them. I don't know whether it's grinding them along the bottom or just the wire hardware getting worn, but they don't last forever. Absolutely a necessary lure in the box though, so worth the slightly limited lifespan.

I have been using the #6 hornet trolling, and I am finding it dives much deeper than the dive curve in Precision Trolling. Anyone else experiencing this, or are my baits "out of tune".

Have you recently replaced any trebles or split rings, the hook size can alter a #4...but that is rare. I have not had to tune and Hornets unless I really ripped them from a snag and stretched the front wire badly..than it takes a bit to get them back in place again.

The Salmo warranty for life is very real, so if it does not perform as intended, they will replace it. You need to send it in to them but they will replace them.

Thanks for replies. I figured they may be worn out but I don't see the wear.I have changed some hooks but always use hooks that appear to be the same as original. The problems started well after hook changes.I couple never had a split ring on the front.Backwater Eddy,do you know what size split rings and brand/size replacement hooks work best? I'd like to try to get them running.I'll send them back over the winter. Thanks, again.I'll let everybody know the results.

A Salmo Hornet #4 has a #8 treble hook, not sure about the size of the split ring. A smaller Berkley Cross Lock snap should work well and not effect the action of the lure.

I find if you add a swivel and snap that is too long in relation to the size of the crank...this will effect the action due to it's pivot point...so I try to keep the pivot point close to the eyelet as it was intended. Too far away from the pivot, that can make a lure roll to one side as well.

Odds are it is the front wire bent down or to one side, or a bit of both...if it rolls to the right, tune it to the left and visa-versa.

A tip I often use in really snagy areas is remove the belly treble hook...that is the culprit that most often gets snagged up...and often it's the rear treble that get the fish.

I'm a fan of replacing the rear trebles with Triple Gip trebles, as I feel they bite and hold head shaking eyes better...even when fished barbless as I often do.

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks, again! I like the Triple Grips, too, and will use them since you say the bait can handle them.I use a #1 duo-snap which is more symetric then a crosslock and pretty small. The last bait to go sour did so after a 12lb. northern grabbed it so something got bent.
