Tim Moonan and Terry Zampogna conquer Chautauqua Lake.
This past weekend the N.E.W.C. held their Championships for the second year in a row at Chautauqua Lake, in New York State.
Chautauqua Lake has been well known for its world class Musky and Bass fishing, and the last two years the N.E.W.C. has showcased the fantastic fishery that produces fish that have rivaled the weights from erie events during the last couple years.
Averaging just shy of 6 pounds per fish to take top honors was the team of Tim Moonan and Terry Zampogna , weighing 41.18 pounds for 7 fish.
While talking to Tim and Terry after the event, they echoed the same comments that most teams had stated: " Pre fishing was tough this week. We tried to fish over Labor Day weekend knowing that the lake would be torn up from all the boaters, and the fish would probably be shut down for the weekend. We didn't give up knowing this, and came back here Wednesday and struggled until Friday, when the water stabilized and traffic was minimal on the lake".
The winners along with most teams were pulling cranks in the deep end of the lake near Mission Meadows.
Tournament Director Tom Means stated:" I was extreemely pleased with the results from the weekend. I had suggested to several teams to try the Mission Meadows area trolling while pre fishing, and that the water and bite should be timed perfect for the start of this event, and everything fell into place perfectly". I always try to time our events so the anglers have an enjoyable event, and this one was a home run.
While the average winning fish weight was down about a half pound per fish from last year, our teams definitely showed all the spectators that came to the weighins what the lakes potential was with several 7 pound fish being brought in each day, along with Saturdays big fish of 8.24 pounds caught by Father and Son team Dave and Dave Smith from Central Square N.Y..
While speaking with the Smith's at dinner Friday evening, they had just finished prefishing, and stated that this was the first time they had been on the water, and never touched a fish all day. After weighing 4 fish on Saturday, they were amazed at what a difference a day makes, along with the size of the fish. Dave stated " Tom told us there were big fish in this lake, but when our first two fish weighed more than our 5 fish limit did on Oneida Lake (their home lake), I couldn't believe it". "We also caught 2 Muskies, and had a great time".
At the conclusion of the first day, we had quite a race going on. Not only are the top three teams for Team of Year title close, they are all in the top 4 spots after weighing in thier fish.
Saturdays top 5:
1. Terry Zampogna - Tim Moonan - 5 fish - 31.59 pounds

4. Dave Smith - Dave Smith - 4 fish - 20.29 pounds
5. Brian Hammond - Russ Liddiard - 3 fish - 19.71 pounds

Sunday the anglers were greated with heavy fog, and once the fog lifted, the wind picked up from a different direction from the day before, making the bite a bit more challenging.
