Just wondering if I would be able to use a discontinued Lowrance plastic portable box (found on leiextras.com) to convert my new 522 to a portable unit. It seems to me that if the 522 would mount between the two plastic upright attachments, it might work. It would save me a few bucks vs buying the $180 portable converter already available.... any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

As long as the 522 unit fits in the mounting bracket the box would work. But you'll still need a battery, power cable, and transducer. You'll either have to pull them out of your boat, or buy them in addition to the portable box. And you'll have to figure out how to rig / mount the transducer, whether you want something like a portable suction-cup mount or a vertical mount for ice fishing.

Cabela's also has everything that you need to convert it into a portable: the soft-side bag, the plastic base with uprights, battery and charger.

Check out the pictures in my album for what I made for my LCX25C:

I also have a PDF document showing the dimensions for all of the parts needed for construction if you decide to build it. PM me if you decide too and I will send it to you.

Thanks, ALBE..... My 522 has an internal GPS, and I have an extra transducer, so all I need to do is get it set onto some sort of boxlike container which will also hold my power supply... I think I can adapt an older Lowrance Portable box to suit what I need to do....
