Hot Runr Guy

Traveling WB on 80-94 near Gary In, Thursday afternoon, all of a sudden there's a tire tread laying in the lane, as well as a large twisted hunk of aluminum. Sure enough, just ahead on the shoulder, is a guy with an enclosed utility trailer, missing the exterior-mounted fender. What I thought was interesting, the basic tire was still on the rim, but the tread, like a truck tire "re-cap", was what blew off. I never thought that smaller tires like ours were being re-treaded.

I had the entire tread come off on a non-chinese GY Marathon on I-75 taking my fender with it. It was on the passenger side and I can't see the wheel because the spare tire is in the way. I didn't even know that it happened, I thought I had run over something in the road. Drove for around 30 minutes at highway speed when, luckily, we had to pull over to close a cooler lid that had blown open. I had been driving all that time on the steel belts and the tire never did go flat. Says good things about the strength of the tire but not about the tread since the tire was only 3 years old. I believe the problem was due to UV damage since this same thing had happened before to my spare tire. Both tires face the sun when the trailer is parked. I've since gotten some tire covers that are made for RV's to keep the sun off them.
