Does anybody have any good smallmouth recipes , we have been killing them on Erie the last week or so and filling our freezers. Any tips would be helpful.
Profish
p.s. I heard there was a way to saute bass and perch roe, ohter than in just butter, any tips ?
When you say filling your freezer I hope your not keeping more than your possesion limit. If your "killing" them try only keeping enough for a fish fry when you want one. Don't think you will find any recipes for thesegreat fish here.

I prefer smallies stuffed with baby seal and eagle. That's a taste sensation that can't be topped. :)

Come on ProFish, put 'em back. Not too many years ago fisheries biologists made the claim it was "not possible to 'fish out' a healthy lake." Well, we know painfully well that ain't so. Be a sportsman.

Dido what Cisco said. I do not like meat hunters. I kept 8 walleyes between the two of us in Waubay South Dakota three weeks ago and I felt bad about that. Catch, Photo and Release. Keep a trophy for the wall. Keep a few for a fish fry. But, I don't believe in filling freezers.
come on guys if the guy pays for a fishing license isnt it his right to keep some fish if he wants what happens to the walleyes that die at the tournaments do they just throw them away .I dont like bass but i do like fish so does that make me a bad sportsmen my 2 cents

Erie smallmouth taste like crap.THROWEMBACK.You want to eat some good tasting fish, stick to perch and walleye.
There is nothing wrong with keeping fish, just try not to always fill the Freezer with them. Besides God didn't make smallmouths for eatin'. Do yourself a favor and take it easy on the smallies, they may be alright for a while, but I doubt any man alive could go through a Freezer of them. Although if you like them.... would you be interested in buying some car... um I mean European Tuna from me?

Yeah, I hope he's a troller. If not I hope he has read the warnings about Erie smallies. DNR says Erie smallies are eating tremendous amounts of Gobies which have been eating Zebra mussels. The Zebra mussels filter lake water and are highly polluted which pollutes the gobies, which pollutes the smallies, which pollutes any hog who eats them more than a couple times a year. The smallmouth fishery on Erie is world class, but smallies do not reproduce like eyes so they need more protection from stupid fishermen. The limit has been lowered to 5, but it needs to be lowered more because of people like the original poster.

We only keep 5 fish per man per day-3 guys.
We always follow the rules.
If the ODNR thought keeping 5 fish per day per person would hurt the population, they would not allow it.
You can get some nice fillets off 5 lbers.
It fills a freezer fast.
I was tired of using FRY MAJIC and thought some one might have some good recipes.

I can't believe you guys, why don't you layoff. I used to think that sportsman were some of the niceist people around but I am starting to wonder. Eveyone is either complaining or trying to push their personal opinions or views off on eveyone else. If everyone would quit complaining and start working together maybe we would figure out why the walleye aren't biting and start catching them. I usually keep couple limits of smallmouth, walleye, and perch a year. I hate cleaning fish so I usually just throw them back. Smallmouth are excellent smoked. I either use a fish seasoning that you can buy from bass pro, or marinate mixture that a friend gave to me.
The way the marinate goes is, salt the fillets like they are french fries that you wouldn't eat, then mix equal parts of worstshire and teraiki plus a few drops of liquid smoke, pour over fillets and marinate over night, then put a layer of brown sugar on the fillets and smoke with alder chips or any fruit tree chips. This marinate also works for steelhead and catfish.
For all the guys that are into complaining or posting your personal opinions regarding keeping fish, go ahead and post away, I am going fishing.....
You are certainly entitled to keep a legal limit as outlined by the Ministry. You are asking about recipes, so I have some food for thought for you...
5 lb. smallies in Canadian waters are probably females, and that's prime breeding stock for the species.
Bass grow very slowly in northern waters, and while I'm no fisheries expert, a 5 lb. smallie in the Ottawa area is probably between 15 and 20 years old.
Doesn't "filling your freezer with 15 year old prime breeding fish give you pause for thought??????

Yea, Their not the best but I'll eat em anytime I get them too..
You guys need to keep some of your opinions to yourself. If your not fishing to eat em once in a while , then why fish at all...
Thats like shooting a deer just to see if you can hit it. Anytime a hook goes in a fishes mouth your risking killing it so why the fuss if you do every now and then (as long as its legal).
Heres my no-fail fish recipe that works on almost anything..
Take your fillets and lay it on a sheet of foil.
Spice to your taste, I have a fish rub I use for this
lay Bacon over the top
place some onion on top of the bacon
place a nice hunk of heart stopper on top (butter)
Wrap the fillet in the foil (make a pocket packet out of it)
BBQ, Broil, or bake for 15-30 min depending on temp and style, or untill flaky.
serve with hash browns or pasta
The bacon usually kills any fishy taste
mmm mmm good. and nowhere near healthy,

Try reading the post before you jump! Most did not say don't keep smallmouth, they said don't fill the freezer because they don't reproduce or grow as fast as other good eating fish like walleyes and perch. There is a great smallmouth fishery on Lake Erie but if we continue to slaughter them, there won't be. ODNR recognized that and put a 14" length limit on them and cut the bag limit from 8 to 5. I don't think there is anything wrong with eating smallmouth, but I do argue with filling the freezer. If you don't want to read opinions, why are you reading this board which is full of opinions?

Hi,
I don't have anything against a person who keeps their limit of fish to eat. Up here we have a catch limit and a possesion limit which states that you are allowed to have a certain number of fish at home, camp etc. this includes what you catch when you go back out again! If I ate a shore lunch of my limit of walleye for the day I can't go back out and catch more for supper.
Don't other places have this?
Roger Mayer.
I certainly don't mind keeping some to eat. Actually, in early spring, they are very very very good to eat. The cold water I am certain has something to do with it.
However, anyone who keeps a 5 lb smallmouth and cleans it has a job ahead of him. You should cut all the red part off the meat before you eat it. The red is strong, just as it is on walleye. By the time you clean a 5 lber , get rid of the red by trimming it, you could have just as well kept something smaller. Personally, I think it takes a sportsman to throw the bigger ones back and keep the jacks. But, you bought your license and you read the rules correctly. I just hope there are not many like you on the lake.
Instead of giving a guy a hard time for following the rules, why not do something constructive like get a petition going or something.I think it is time for a approch a little more similar to Canadas with slot limits and all, Its funny that with all the advances in knwoledge the rules have changed very little, the limits on bass for inland lakes is rediculous, the bad thing is alot of people have no regard for the rules, I saw half the boats this spring fishing for bass, where here in Michigan were it doesnt open until the Saturday before Memorial day. Most of the fisherman I encounter are good people but I seem to run into some that are real ingnorant and any new rules would be hard for them to comprehend.

I agree with most of you except you misread the message. The guy said that he kept five.... pounders not 5lbers. He kept 5... one pounders. Not a capital offense even tho I don't agree with the logic. Seems that there are plenty of fish to eat without eating a great game fish PERIOD

If indeed he kept 5 one pound fish, I bet they were not 14 inches in length each. That is illegal.

Man, Ive read all the reply's to this message and I just dont understand why all you guy's and girl's are giving this guy a hard time. :( If he follow's the rule's take's his leagal limit or less I don't see why you guy's should have such a big polem with him doing it. I understand about the Bass having to survive and get old enuff to take out legally. But hink of it this way,,,, This guy is taking his limit, and taking the fish when there big ennuf to take out of the water legally. NOW heres something to think about think of all the people who take Bass way ove there limit some to small and some to big. Arent you glad this guy is admiting to what he is doing and doing it legally??:)
