I was wondering if any one has tried putting glow tape on they're Off-Shore flags for trolling at night. I've used the glow sticks and they do work well but can't always find them when I need them.

Buy battery operated glow sticks I stock up with 20-30 of them and I'm good ALL season, I use rubber bands and attach them longways to the top of the board they actually make the board run better.

I have. I put squares of DOT relective tape on them. Use the silver part, not the red. Most nights, you can see some boards just with the nav. lights. Quick flash with a flash light shows the rest.

Some nights, they're hard to see period. I still like to have it on and put it on every board I get.

Of course, when in traffic with others it would be best to put lights on them for others to see.

I bought a roll of reflective tape at Walmart for little over a dollar. They work great. Shines bright even with a red light on my head lamp. Negative is other boats can't see them.

Wow thanks for the quick responses. I don't know why I didn't think of the battery operated sticks (DUH). And the reflective tape is a good idea also. My thoughts on the glow tape was being able to see the board pulling back and longevity. Right now I will be fishing an inland lake with hardly if any boat traffic so I'm good there.

I use the blinking lights from ACE hardware, they are battery operated, about 2 inches round and come in red and green for port and starboard sides. I have been using them for almost 3 years and have not had to change the batteries yet. very easy to see in the dark and other night trollers can see them as well.

These work really well. http://www.garritylites.com/page77.html Wal mart used to carry these but they don't anymore so you have to buy them online, they run about 2.00 each and will last many many trips I had some that I saved from fall and used them for spring I think I even have some from a couple season ago that will still glow. On Erie I fish in traffic often so lighting boards well is a must.

The new ones I've been using come from Cosco, a 6 pack is 5 bucks, I'm using the same 6from spring must have went on at least 15 night trips or better (fished the spring derby) they work great and they are dirt cheap, I don't see why everyone is using them, plus they looked wicked cool when they go flying back with a horse on! :rockit:

Sorry Rebs the blinking lights SUCK, they drive my eyes and other boaters eyes crazy, I see them even when I'm not looking at the boards, I never understood why guys use those.

I don't know why anyone hasn't come out with a whole glowing board yet. Hint, hint. The glow pigments you use for plastics are the really good, coarse ones that glow super bright for a full 12 hours. Green glowing boards with a flag molded in a red glow color???

I have a set! 1 of 50 in existance that offshore made, picked them up at the walleye central get together like 5-6 years ago (I think but it was awhile ago). I wonder how many are still around?

I do know a guy who grabbed another set and he's down to one of them. I still have mine, these came with the OR-18 everyone was like wow what kind of releases are those, it was when they first came out.

If I leave them out in the sun boy do they glow but they won't last a whole night trip.

They should definitely try it again. Glow pigments have come a long way in the last few years. I had a sample piece of plastic from a Japanese pigment company, cast with something like 22-24 hour glow pigment. I had it sitting on my work bench for a while and that thing would still be glowing super bright the next morning, 6-8 hours later.

And thats kinda my thought on the tape. Even the though theres not as much surface area it might work. At least in very low boat traffic areas.

A section of silicone tubing on the flag to hold a batteries style LED light on top...they type often used for bobbers..that should do the trick.

Replaceable and you can turn them on and off.

Can run green/red to indicate your path of travel for other boaters.

I just take lighted slip bobbers and tape them to off shore boards works great and most walleye fisherman have a few lighed slip bobbers aroun. So nothing new to buy

I think all of the ideas are good. I also CANNOT stand the blinking variety, they drive me crazy enough seeing them 200yards off to even consider having them in my own spread. The biggest problem with tape is that I want to SEE RIGHT NOW, ALL THE TIME what my boards are doing. As mentioned it is also a huge advantage to all interested parties to have your gear visable to other boaters. I think tape is great as a secondary but would never be out without some light source on the board be it electric or cyalume.

Long lasting, bright glow in the dark boards would be a dream come true. When they come on the market I will have a set of six ready to hand down to a buddy.

I posted this pic in a different thread. KGone recommended this idea. I bought the glow sticks at a halloween specialty store. I caulked any openings that there were.

Even having glowing flags would be nice. Easy $25 upgrade :D

We tried one type of glow tape abour 10 of yrs ago & it worked great for about a couple of minutes. LOL The theater people I bought it from said it glowed all night - it was bright enough to be useful for about 5 minutes at best. A dark room is different than outdoors at nite.

I did find it interesting that one poster favored silver reflective tape over red. A fishing buddy & me settled on red over silver pretty quick though I use both. I also favor using a red light to see either silver or red reflective tape. Go figure. Perhaps a difference in brands or? I've only used stuff I bought at NAPA that I think is intended for trucks/tractors (has DOT noted somewhere) - wide strips that are red on 1 end & silver on the other. It was the 1st source I found after figuring out the glow tape was a loser. Putting a bit on the unseen side of the planer board flag is nice if you ever drop a board at nite. Works well on tip-ups too.

I use reflective tape exclusively if there are no other boats and add a glow stick or Thill nite light (red light for bobbers) that is attached to the flag (elect tape, zip tie, r band). Some guys drill a hole in the top of the board close to the flag and slip a Thill nite light in there. Works well, I've just never gotten around to it. Good plan for boards w/o flags.

Played with multiple colors of glow sticks. Some better than others but the typical green last longest.

I use glow sticks one yr, Thill lights the next, sometimes a combination of both... Not all glow sticks are equal & they do have a shelf life. I'm curious about the lights K-Gonefishin mentioned...

Glow bracelets are cool if it is Really dark. A LOT of people would share my opinion that any version of flashing lights can be irritating & Offshore boards fall over at extreme low speeds w/the most? common style of flasher attached to the flags. Goofs up the tattle flag program too. Flashing pumpkins were HOT for awhile "grin"

Yellowbird makes a Glowbird and there is a company marketing a glow planing bobber. I know nothing about either. You can find info on the web.

I kinda recall previously being told or reading about Offshore's Get-Together glow board donations & that is certainly typical of OffShores generosity but I also remembered a thread in Strictly Fishing about an outfit selling a glow board & thought that they donated a couple for a Get-Together? Maybe that was a little later? I apparently got the two mixed up. http://www.walleyecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140320&highlight=lightening+planer+board

The lightening board link at the top of the linked thread is dead. I couldn't open the second (WC link) with a picture as a guest or it's gone too? If you read the thread and are wondering - Willie (RIP) was an early/original distributor of Snapper Releases (OR-18's now).

My bad - read the linked thread a little better - the lightening board was some sort of battery operated deal...
