I primarily fish rivers, and the 'Eyes can be VERY color specific at times. While I feel size is the first concern, a good selection of colors is very important. Bubblegum/Parrot and Firetiger in Fireballs - Hot Pink/Purple and Chartruce, XTP's - any colors of the Lindy Max-gaps glows and My all time "go to" favorite - a good selection of Nothland Mimmic Minnows - the Perch color being hands down the best. Hope this helps, C-man.

I am not a big believer in specific color differences in jigs making a significant difference in fishing success. I basically look at jig colors as bright or dark or glow ...... I have a selection of jig colors and get a bit more specific than that, but not a lot more.

I tend to agree with Hondo...I'm also a big 3 pattern type, Glow, Dark, or Light.
But I would add to that..Flash/Metallic..flash in rivers has proven to me to be a big bonus, and various colors of that flash appears to me to be significant. I have tried a lot of jigs with various forms of flash and blades, and have settled on the Reel Baits flasher jig design as my personal favorite in the widest range of conditions.
The thin willow leaf blade adds flash and noise to the presentation. That bring up the topic of sound, I think that is as key as color in many situations on rivers.

When the bite is on color may not matter as much as the bait you are presenting. At times, color is everything on the Wisconsin waters I fish. Have a selection. Sometimes two-tone sucbh as orange and green or orange and yellow combos are hot. Sometimes the bright, lite, dark jigs can be the trigger.
Change up your colors before you decide the fish are simply not biting. My 2 cents.
Take care,

Light - Dark ( Both with M-flake )
Glow
and my favorite - Lead
I believe size and shape have more to do with anything than color.

I like Gold Plated Jigs.

I wish I could discount it, but I've seen it too many times where there'll be two or three of us in the boat jigging with identical jigs other than color, and only one guy is getting bites. A switch to the hot color generally results in everyone starting to get bites.
